Cassidy dominates from lights to flag in rain-drenched Shanghai to claim first win of the season
Jaguar TCS Racing’s Nick Cassidy delivered a flawless lights-to-flag performance in treacherous wet conditions to win the Shanghai E-Prix, securing his first victory of the season and the first flag-to-flag triumph of the GEN3 Evo era.
Starting from pole after a weather-disrupted qualifying session, Cassidy kept his cool in the wet to control the race from the front, never relinquishing his lead despite intense pressure and standing water across the Shanghai International Circuit.
The New Zealander’s commanding win was a statement return to the top step of the podium, after a string of near-misses in recent months. “This weekend is a massive highlight,” Cassidy said. “Our pace was absolutely unbelievable – what a race. We’ve been waiting a long time for this. To get that monkey off the back is awesome.”
Behind him, reigning world champion Pascal Wehrlein made the most of the early ATTACK MODE activations to edge out teammate António Félix da Costa as both TAG Heuer Porsche drivers secured a double podium finish. The result not only marked a bounce-back after a pointless Saturday for the German marque, but it also saw Porsche leapfrog Nissan to retake the lead in the FIA Teams’ World Championship standings.
Wehrlein, who now sits second in the drivers’ standings on 103 points, praised the team’s wet-weather improvements. “Very tricky conditions especially at the start. Today was the first time we were very competitive in the wet – that wasn’t the case in Tokyo or Monaco. We’ve found a good way and I’m really happy about the result.”
For da Costa, it was a gritty drive to third place despite struggling with rear grip and balance throughout. “It was very hard to keep the car on track,” he admitted. “I didn’t have the pace of the two guys in front, so it was all about bringing the podium home.”
Maserati MSG Racing’s Jake Hughes secured an impressive fourth, followed by DS PENSKE’s Jean-Éric Vergne in fifth and Andretti’s Nico Mueller in sixth. Stoffel Vandoorne recovered from a late spin to finish seventh, ahead of Robin Frijns (Envision Racing), Lucas di Grassi (Lola Yamaha ABT), and rookie Taylor Barnard (NEOM McLaren), who rounded out the top ten.
Despite challenging conditions and heavy spray, 21 of the 22 cars made it to the chequered flag, with multiple drivers – including Jake Dennis, Nyck de Vries, Dan Ticktum and Sam Bird – caught out by standing water around the circuit.
The result tightens the title race, with championship leader Oliver Rowland still on top with 171 points, but seeing his margin cut to 68 points over Wehrlein, while da Costa sits third on 88 points. In the FIA Manufacturers’ World Championship, Nissan maintains a narrow lead over Porsche.
As the championship enters its final stretch with five races to go, all eyes are now on the upcoming rounds as Porsche gains momentum and Jaguar eyes a late-season resurgence and supporting your driver and team has never been easier with personalised t shirts to show your colours.
