Gunther dominates Round 10 in Shanghai as DS Penske secures emphatic 1-2 finish

Maximilian Günther delivered a flawless performance in Round 10 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, leading a dominant DS Penske 1-2 finish at the Shanghai International Circuit.

Starting from pole, Günther held off challenges from across the grid to secure his second win of the 2025 season, strengthening his bid in the drivers’ title race.

Günther’s victory was complemented by a storming drive from teammate Jean-Éric Vergne, who fought through the field from 10th to second in one of the standout performances of the weekend. The double podium sees DS Penske assert itself as a serious threat in both the drivers’ and teams’ standings as the championship heads into its final rounds.

The race began in dry, overcast conditions, allowing teams to push flat out without the variable of weather interference. Günther held his lead off the line while McLaren rookie Taylor Barnard slotted into second. The young Brit was in fine form, defending bravely against experienced rivals to secure his first Formula E podium in third.

One of the drives of the day came from Dan Ticktum. The Nissan driver, starting 21st on the grid, carved his way through the pack to finish fourth, making up an astonishing 17 positions. Aggressive use of ATTACK MODE and a strategic approach to energy management allowed Ticktum to maximise Nissan’s potential after a disappointing qualifying.

Championship leader Oliver Rowland (Nissan) finished fifth, maintaining a strong points buffer despite missing out on the podium. While not the most spectacular result of his season, it was a vital one in the context of the title battle, especially with Pascal Wehrlein and Nick Cassidy finishing further down the order.

Vergne’s second-place finish marked his first podium of 2025 and a return to form for the two-time champion, who has struggled to find consistency this season. The Frenchman was visibly emotional after the race, crediting his team’s strategy and Günther’s pace for the strong result.

Further back, Jaguar’s Nick Cassidy and Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein were among those who had to settle for lower points finishes, putting more pressure on them heading into Sunday’s Round 11.

With DS Penske locking out the top two steps of the podium and Günther inching closer to the top three in the standings, the championship picture continues to evolve. Formula E’s return to Shanghai provided tight racing and dramatic overtakes, confirming the city’s place as a thrilling venue on the all-electric calendar.

As teams now turn their focus to Jakarta, the DS Penske duo will hope to carry their Shanghai momentum into the final stretch of the season—with Günther now an outside bet in the title chase and Vergne reminding everyone he’s far from done.
