Full technical details of the planned Tesla Cybercab autonomous taxi have been made public for the first time.

The US EV maker has revealed battery, motor, range and weight details for its two-seat driverless car, promising industry-leading efficiency but some clear deviations from usual Tesla specs.

Tesla Cybercab motor and battery

Certification documents filed with the United States’ Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show that the controversial cab will use a 219bhp front-mounted motor and a 48kWh battery pack.

Both are relatively modest by Tesla standards, with a lower powered motor clearly intended to deliver efficiency and range needed for a taxi, rather than the performance expected from a private car.

Tesla Cybercab range

Tesla claims that the Cybercab will return efficiency of 6m/kWh – substantially more than the official 4.7m/kWh the already-frugal Model 3 returns and some way ahead of industry averages.

Tesla Cybercab side view

It has also given a range estimate of more than 418 miles from the 48kWh battery. That, however, is based on lab testing rather than real-world driving.

The EPA applies a modifier of 0.7 to such figures to determine a realistic range. In the case of the Tesla Cybercab, that translates to a real range of 292.7 miles – close to the 300 miles claimed when the cab was first unveiled.

Tesla Cybercab weight and capacity

The EPA filings also reveal that the Cybercab weighs 1,412kg – relatively light for an EV and around the same as a Renault 5 or Fiat Grande Panda. Its gross vehicle weight of 1,692kg should provide enough capacity for two passengers and their luggage but is relatively slight compared to even small EVs like the Renault or Fiat.

Tesla Cybercab interior

Unlike those superminis, the Tesla Cybercab is purely a two-seater, with space in the front and rear for luggage. In keeping with Tesla’s other cars, the interior is sparse, with a single centre screen the only dashboard feature. The Cybercab doesn’t even have a steering wheel or pedals, reflecting the plan for it to be fully autonomous, although prototypes have been fitted with manual controls for on-road testing.

Tesla Cybercab ‘self-driving’

Tesla claims the Cybercab will be fully autonomous and will not feature any driver controls. However, it hasn’t received regulatory approval for unsupervised autonomous driving and there is still no clear roadmap to its commercial introduction as a driverless cab.

When he revealed the Cybercab, Tesla boss Elon Musk said that before its launch, Tesla would have rolled out unsupervised full self-driving to the Model 3 and Model Y. As per previous promises around FSD, that hasn’t happened.

Tesla Cybercab launch date

There is also no clear plan for when the Cybercab will reach the market. Musk initially said it would go on sale in the US “before 2027”. The EPA listings include an “introduction into commerce” date of May 29, 2026, which is a step towards the start of production, but doesn’t reflect any solid move to market.

Given that Musk has a reputation for over-promising on delivery dates and the regulatory hurdles it still needs to overcome, commercially available Cybercabs could still be some distance away.

The Volvo EX60 is one of the EV models compatible with the Tesla Supercharger network

Volvo has confirmed that its European range of EVs will be compatible with the continent’s 20,000-strong Tesla Supercharger network spread across 29 countries, starting from the fourth quarter of this year.

Widely considered to be the best public charging network with charging speeds of up to 350kW, the Tesla Supercharger sites are highly praised for their reliability and ease of use. Should any EV be compatible with the network, the driver simply has to plug it in using the charging cable and allow it to charge.

The Tesla Supercharger-ready Volvo models are the EX30 crossover, the EX40 and EX40 cousins, the new EX60, the full-sized EX90 SUV, and the ES90 saloon. In the United States, these cars are already compatible with the Supercharger, albeit via the Volvo app.

According to Alejandro Castro Perez, Volvo Cars’ energy chief, the Swedish manufacturer has allowed for Supercharger compatibility as a way of making EV charging easier, and helping usher in a more unified approach to public charging.

volvo es90 side view

“Volvo drivers already have access to over three million charging points globally through the Volvo app,” he said. “Adding Tesla Superchargers in Europe means they now have even easier access to one of the most recognised fast charging networks.

“As we accelerate towards full electrification, our goal is to make charging simple and effortless, through a seamless ecosystem.”

Volvo’s latest electric-only model, the EX60, rides on Gothenburg’s latest 800V SPA3 platform, which has charging speeds of up to 400kW. This means it can onboard 200 miles of range in 10 minutes using the right charger. The EX60 also has a range of up to 503 miles, making it longest-range EV on sale in Europe at present.

Despite running on a heavily revised version of Volvo’s previous-generation 400V SPA2 platform, the ES90 and EX90 run the EX60 close when it comes to miles. The former can manage 435 miles on a single charge, while the latter achieves 380.

In September last year, Tesla introduced a handful of new V4 chargers across four sites in the US. Each boasts charging speeds of up to 500kW. Despite the increase in numbers, they still lag behind BYD’s upcoming ‘Flash’ chargers, which promise up to 1,500kW of charging power.

The Renault 5 is the UK’s cheapest electric to insure, according to a new study by a major insurance specialist.

Moneysupermarket found that the French supermini was more than £500 per year cheaper to insure than the nation’s priciest EV – the Jaguar I-Pace.

The insurance comparison site examined policies sold through its service in the first five months of this year to uncover the cheapest and most expensive EVs to insure.

Its data showed that Tesla continues to struggle with high premiums, with variants of its two best-sellers accounting for half of the 10 most expensive cars.

renault 5 gets one-pedal driving

It also showed, however, that the average premium across all EVs continues to fall, from £587 in October 2025 to £561 in May 2026.

At the cheapest end of the scale, the award-winning Renault 5 carries an average insurance premium of £418 per year. Just behind it, the Mini Cooper S Level 2 costs £445 per year, while the higher-specified Level 3 is an extra £41 per year. Between the two Mini variants the Volkswagen ID.3 Life, comes in at £477, while the Nissan Leaf Tekna rounds out the five cheapest EVs at £487.

Moneysupermarkt’s data also revealed that none of the 10 cheapest EVs to insure falls foul of the Expensive Car Supplement, which adds £440 a year to vehicle tax and applies to any EV priced over £50,000.

At the opposite end of the scale, half of the most expensive EVs to insure also attract the ECS, pushing up their running costs further.

Jaguar’s now-discounted I-Pace has proved the costliest to insure so far this year, with an average premium of £921.

Just behind it is the first of five Tesla variants – the Model Y Long Range AWD – with an average insurance premium of £895. The Model Y also occupies third place in the table, with the Standard Range model coming in at a similarly punchy £878. Mercedes’ previous generation GLC took fourth spot with an average bill of £872 ahead of another Tesla, this time the Model 3 Standard range Plus, at £868.

Alicia Hempsted, car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket said falling EV premiums along with recent VED changes made pinning down running costs “a moving target”. She commented: “Whilst some EV drivers will now pay less than they would have done a few months ago, others are paying more.

“The Renault 5, Mini Cooper Electric and VW ID.3 all come in under £550 a year to insure, and also miss the Expensive Car Supplement. For households making the switch from a petrol or diesel hatchback, that is a genuinely compelling running-cost picture.

“At the other end, premium EVs like the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron can cost almost £1,000 a year to insure, and they are also affected by the Expensive Car Supplement. The threshold rise has spared a handful of mid-priced EVs that would previously have been included, but the lesson is the same: with so many moving parts, drivers really do need to look at the full picture before they commit.”

Tesla has been criticised after pulling the plug on a special delivery event for its Model S and Model X ‘Signature Edition’ cars just three days before it was scheduled to take place.

The invitation-only event on May 12 at Tesla’s soon-to-be-repurposed Fairmont factory, was supposed to see invitees who purchased the final edition Signature Edition Model S and Model X collect their cars. This ultra-limited run was introduced to mark the end of both models’ production.

Just 250 of the Model S Signature Edition were said to have been produced, while the Model X version would prove even more exclusive with a reported 100 units.

Tesla Model S Signature edition was supposed to be delivered to its buyers at the event

Yet at the 11th hour, the Elon Musk-owned carmaker sent out a two sentence email, reading: “The Signature Edition Delivery Event scheduled for May 12, 2026, has been postponed. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

What happens next?

Nothing, really. Buyers who forked out $159,420 for either car won’t be receiving their purchase any time soon. No reason was given for cancelling this “invite-only celebration of the first of the last deliveries of Model S and Model X Signature Edition — ever”. No rescheduled date for the Tesla Signature Event was given, either.

Tesla Signature cancellation

The lack of information provoked a backlash amongst attendees, who fired back saying “Spent thousands on this trip… @Tesla” and requested that Tesla “compensate owners or hold the event on the originally planned date”.

Tesla has form here…

This isn’t the first time that Tesla has pulled the plug on an scheduled event at the last minute. When it was preparing to deliver the first Model S Plaid in 2021, it was delayed by more than a week, with Musk quoted as saying the 1,000bhp super saloon needed “one more week of tweak”.

The unveil of the Robotaxi was pushed back from August to October 2024, to allow the company to build more prototypes.

The EV Powered take on the Tesla Signature event cancellation

On a broader scale, Tesla Signaturegate marks yet another case of Tesla treating its customers with a lack of regard. Those who paid $159,420 for their car were also subject to a no-resale agreement, with a $50,000 penalty.

Moreover, since 2017, Musk has been promising a new version of the groundbreaking Tesla Roadster, with the latest arrival date quoted as April 2026. In March this year, he wrote: “New Roadster unveil hopefully next month. It will be a banger next-level” on X.

New Tesla Roadster

Despite the production date being moved several times from 2020 to-date, Tesla has still managed to attract multiple deposits for the new Roadster, ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 for the Founders’ Series cars.

Unsurprisingly, those who put money down have reportedly grown increasingly annoyed with the delays and have encountered a raft of difficulties in getting their money refunded after almost a decade of waiting and empty promises. The Signature event is another controversy in Tesla’s recent history. Like the company’s future as a carmaker, as to what happens next is anyone’s guess.

Tesla is doing a 350-unit-strong ‘Signature Series’ run of its outgoing Model S and Model X as a farewell before production stops for good by the end of Q2 2026.

The Elon Musk-owned brand will produce 250 Signature Series versions of the Model S, and 100 of the Model X. To add an extra sense of exclusivity, access to both cars is invite-only to select Tesla customers.

Tesla Model S and X Signature pricing

Pricing for the Model X Signature Series has been confirmed at $159,420 – almost £119,000 at the time of writing. This represents a premium of $30,000 (around £22,300) over the standard Model X Plaid.

Tesla Model S Signature rear badging

The Model S Signature Series comes with the same price tag as its sibling. Once again, this is a significant jump over the standard Model S Plaid, which is listed at $124,900 (appx. £93,000).

Both cars come in Garnet Red Paint, which is not available on any current Tesla production car. A gold Tesla ‘T’ logo sits in the centre of the ‘grille’, while around the back, there’s both gold Plaid and Signature badging.

Tesla Model S and X Signature interior

Step inside, and the Tesla Model S and X Signature come with a white interior featuring Alcantara upholstery offset with gold piping and black inserts. There’s also Signature badging and matching door sills, plus additional Signature badging on the dashboard denoting the car’s production number.

Tesla’s yoke steering wheel, gold Plaid design puddle lights, and a bespoke interior lighting sequence upon entry separate the Signature cars from the regular Model S and X.

What else do you get for your money?

Tesla’s $10,000 (£7,448) ‘Luxe’ package is also included in the price of the Model S and X Signature, and bundles together supervised full self-driving, four-year premium service, lifetime supercharging for the duration of vehicle ownership, and the Premium Connectivity pack.

Tesla Model S Signature wheels

A Signature Edition key fob, once again finished with the production number, is also part of the starting price. In addition to the obvious difference in body styles, the two cars have varied exterior detailing. The Model S Signature comes with colour-coded door handles, carbon-ceramic brakes to cope with the car’s 1,034bhp, gold brake callipers, and 21-inch ‘Velarium’ wheels. Meanwhile, the Model X retains the Plaid’s standard red brake callipers.

What’s in a name?

The Signature nameplate is a significant one in the Tesla story. When the Model S debuted in 2012, the first 1,000 cars were ‘Signature’ editions with a $100,000 (£74,000) asking price. They also required a $40,000 (£29,794) deposit.

By reintroducing the Signature moniker as a last hurrah for the Model S and X, Tesla appears to be bookending the story of two of the most influential EVs in automotive history.

Tesla is reportedly working on an all-new, entry-level SUV, according to reports.

Tesla is reportedly working on a new small electric SUV, according to Reuters.

A group of four people close to Tesla have reportedly confirmed that the Elon Musk-led carmaker has contacted several suppliers to discuss plans for a compact SUV, which would be an all-new model and not a variant of the existing Model 3 or Model Y.

New Tesla SUV: What we know so far and launch date

The talks are said to have covered the manufacturing process and specifications for various components. The sources said that the car will be initially built in Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai facility, with production expanding to the United States and Europe.

Of those involved, two said the car will be 4.28 metres long, meaning it would straddle the B- and C-segment SUV class. Nonetheless, it remains significantly shorter than Tesla’s best-selling 4.57m Model Y.

The new Tesla SUV would be smaller than the Model Y by some margin

Should it come to fruition, Tesla’s new SUV would cost less than the entry-level Model 3 saloon, which starts at $37,000 USD – around £27,550 based on the current exchange rate.

The tip-off added that Tesla planned to save costs by adopting a single-motor electric powertrain and using a smaller battery than existing models. The timeline for Tesla’s new SUV remains unclear, with production unlikely to begin this year.

What’s next?

The short answer is “who knows?”

Despite dominating the EV market with its Model 3 and Model Y, Tesla’s boss, Elon Musk, has a history of cancelling new models at the last minute and flip-flopping on the brand’s roadmap.

A rebooted Tesla Roadster was unveiled in 2017, with a 2020 production date. Manufacturing was then moved to 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. Musk promised only recently that production would begin in April 2026.

New Tesla Roadster

In 2020, he announced that Tesla would build an entry-level Model 2 costing around $25,000 (around £19,000). In 2024, Musk went on to deride the project as “silly” and “pointless” as  Tesla abandoned the Model 2 and pivoted towards driverless vehicles and autonomous driving with its Robotaxi.

Last August, Tesla killed off the Model S and Model X in Europe, then quietly brought them back a few months later in October. Once again, these two ageing models were culled in January this year as Tesla repurposed its Fremont factory (their place of build) in California to build its Optimus humanoid robots.

Yet just recently, a final ‘Signature’ edition of the Model S and X was announced as an exclusive goodbye to a select audience of 350 customers.

The latest Tesla Model Y will be offered as a seven-seater when it hits the UK market in May 2026.

Aimed at the likes of the similarly priced Peugeot e-5008 and upcoming Skoda Peaq, the Model Y seven-seater will be solely available in top-spec, Long Range All-Wheel Drive trim powered by a twin-motor setup.

The additional two seats in the Model Y’s boot will come at a £2,500 premium over the standard car, bringing the starting price to £54,490.

The Elon Musk-owned manufacturer has not said whether it will offer the Model Y seven-seater in other trim levels, including the base-spec £41,990 Model Y ‘Standard’.

The extra weight from the third row of seating reduces the Model Y’s range from 391 to 372 miles. Wth the rear seats in place, the Model Y seven-seater retains 381 litres of luggage capacity, which rises to 894 litres when folded. As usual with Tesla, figures are measured to the roofline.

Tesla Model Y seven seater interior

Alongside the extra two seats, the Tesla Model Y seven-seater differs from its five-seat cousin courtesy of a sliding, middle row that enables access to the rearmost compartment, as well as a set of USB-C charging ports for those travelling in the boot. As with the outgoing Model Y, the rear seats are intended for children due to substantially less legroom than in the front and middle compartments.

Heavily refreshed for the 2025 model year, this latest Model Y (codenamed ‘Juniper’) benefits from sharper exterior styling over its predecessor, plus much-improved build quality and refinement. The updates appeared to pay off, as Tesla’s C-segment SUV once again topped the global EV sales charts in 2025 and proved to be the best-selling EV in Europe.

Despite the Model Y’s successes, Tesla continues on an embattled path following Musk’s controversial involvement in the political world. The brand’s stalwart Model S and Model X cars have been axed to make way for the Tesla Optimus robot. Meanwhile, the brand finds itself in hot water after redacting crash reports involving its Robotaxi fleet in Austin, Texas.

Elon Musk has once again promised the arrival of a new Tesla Roadster. Yes. Again.

In reference to an April 2026 debut, the controversial billionaire and Tesla owner wrote on X: “New Roadster unveil hopefully next month. It will be a banger next-level.”

This isn’t the first time Musk has promised a second-generation version of one of the world’s landmark EVs. When it launched in 2008, the Tesla Roadster showed the world that EVs could be accessible and entertaining to drive.

The prototype for the new Tesla Roadster was unveiled in 2017, with a promised 2020 production date.

The start of manufacturing was then moved to 2022, then 2023, 2024, and most recently, 2025. Despite the setbacks, Tesla has still managed to attract multiple deposits for the new Roadster, ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 for the Founders’ Series cars.

New Tesla Roadster rear view

Those who put money down have reportedly grown frustrated with Tesla’s delays and have encountered a raft of difficulties in getting their money refunded after almost a decade of waiting.

Musk has long promised a vehicle with a sub-60mph time, and it is expected that the next-gen Tesla Roadster will be this car. After recently patenting “fan car” technology, rumours have suggested that the Roadster 2.0 could also benefit from this aerodynamic system, which sucks the car to the road and was banned by Formula 1 in 1978 due to safety concerns.

Providing hope to buyers who have placed deposits, Tesla recently filed two new trademarks specifically for the Roadster, and revealed a glimpse of a megacasted seat optimised to handle the car’s G-forces.

Should it arrive, a new Roadster would provide a much-needed shot in the arm for Tesla, which has endured a bruising 2026. In addition to losing EV market share to Chinese newcomers BYD and BMW, it has stopped production of its Model S and Model X to focus on its Optimus robots.

This leaves the best-selling Model 3 and Model Y as the only models in Tesla’s ageing line-up. Despite being heavily revised for the 2024 model year, the Model 3 arrived in 2017, with its bigger brother debuting five years later. UK order books are open for the new Tesla Roadster, and require a £4,000 down payment.

Tesla Model Y L

The six-seat Tesla Model Y L has taken a step closer to being sold in the UK, after fresh documents revealed that a right-hand drive (RHD) version has been approved for the Australian market.

In summer 2023, this bigger, wider variant of Tesla’s world-beater was leaked as a patent filing on the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information website under the ‘Model Y L‘ moniker. We expect the Model Y six-seater to have two seats up front, two in the middle, and two in the boot.

The six-seat Model Y is 177mm longer than the standard 4.79m-long car, and 150mm wider. Tesla has also increased the car’s height from 1.62m to 1.67m.

Visually, the RHD Model Y L is unchanged from the car seen in 2025. It retains the new 19-inch wheel design, a blacked-out boot lip spoiler, and a new gold paint finish. To increase height and comfort for the third-row passengers, the bigger Model Y gets a bespoke pressed bootlid.

Tesla Model Y rear view

The Chinese patent filing suggested the six-seat Tesla Model Y L would get the dual-motor, 455bhp powertrain, producing 80 more horsepower than existing UK cars. This would make sense, given that the bigger of the two Model Ys weighs 91kg more than the regular five-seater.

If and when it makes it to the UK, the six-seater L will be the third iteration of the facelifted Model Y, along with the cheaper, entry-level ‘Standard’ model (now dubbed Rear-Wheel Drive) and the regular ‘Premium’ car.

Earlier this month, Tesla also introduced a Standard version of the Model 3 and a base trim Cybertruck to boost sales, but it’s unlikely that the controversial pick-up truck will go on sale in the UK due to regulatory reasons.

Despite the updates to the Model 3 and Model Y range, Tesla has announced no plans to replace the recently axed Model S and Model X. Instead, the US carmaker has chosen to switch its focus to its fully automated Robotaxi taxi service and Optimus humanoid robots.

Tesla has launched a new, cheaper version of the Cybertruck and slashed the price of its range-topping Cyberbeast model as it faces plummeting demand.

The Cybertruck Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive is now the most affordable variant of the controversial pick-up, priced from $59,990 in its native United States. That’s $20,000 less than the Premium AWD model, the next-cheapest option.

The price of the top-of-the-range tri-motor 845bhp Cyberbeast, meanwhile, has been cut from $114,990 to $99,990.

The price cuts are thought to be an effort to revive flagging sales of the Cybertruck. After selling just fewer than 39,000 units in 2024, Tesla sold just over 20,000 in 2025. Both figures are far short of the targeted 250,000 annual sales announced by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Electric pick-ups have proved a difficult market, with Ford scrapping its pure-EV F-150 Lightning after just three years. That’s despite it outselling the Cybertruck last year.

Like the recently revealed Model 3 and Model Y “Standard” editions, the entry-level Cybertruck strips out some of the features of more expensive models to help cut costs.

The Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive loses the air suspension of the Premium AWD model and gets downgraded 18-inch alloy wheels. It also takes a hit on practicality, with reduced towing and load capability.

The towing limit has dropped from 4,990kg to 3,402kg, and load capacity is down from 1,134kg to 910kg – less than an Isuzu D-Max EV.

Inside, there have also been cost-cutting measures. The 15-speaker sound system has been replaced with a seven-speaker setup and, like the Model Y, the 9.4-inch rear touchscreen has been removed, and the faux-leather upholstery replaced with cloth.

However, the new model retains the same powertrain as the Premium model, offering up to 325 miles of range and a 0-62mph time of just 4.1 seconds.

While the Cybertuck price cuts have just been announced, Musk hinted that they might not last. Asked on social media what the price would be in 10 days’ time, he replied: “Depends on how much demand we see at this price level.”
