Denza unveils wild Z super-GT with four seats and 1,000bhp

Denza has unveiled its new Denza Z super-GT at the Beijing Motor Show, promising a four-figure power output and performance to rival mult-million-pound hypercars.

Due to make its dynamic debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Denza Z packs a 1,000bhp+ powertrain, carbon fibre bodywork and 1,500kW ultra-rapid charging.

Denza says the Z will get from 0-62mph in under two seconds and pre-production models are already testing at the world-famous Nurburgring ahead.

Such performance puts the Denza Z in the same rarified space as cars such as the Rimac Nevera and Pininfarina Battista. Announcing the Z, the brand noted the car “marks a watershed moment for the global auto industry, as the world’s first premium brand with a uniquely new-energy approach breaks into the core territory of million-dollar luxury supercars, a segment traditionally dominated by legacy European manufacturers”.

There’s no word on actual pricing, but the Denza Z is expected to be significantly more expensive than the Z9GT, which is likely to start at around £100,000 when it reaches the UK later this year.

The Z’s most obvious rival appears to be Maserati’s twin GranTurismo and GranCabiro Folgore models, which start in the region of £180,000.

To succeed against it and the ultra-rare hypercars from the likes of Rimac, Denza says it has developed the Z to blend “pure design” with aerodynamic performance and cutting-edge technology.

With a design penned by BYD’s global design director Wolfgang Egger, the four-seater has a traditional GT look, and will be available in convertible, coupe and “track” variants. The brand has launched a public competition to name the three variants ahead of their launch.

Beneath the aero-optimised bodywork, the Denza Z uses the same DiSus-M electromagnetic body-control system as the radical Yangwang U9, which allows for predictive damping and incredibly controlled body movement. There’s no word on whether the Z will be able to leap in the air like the record-breaking U9.

There are also no firm details on the car’s technical specification, including battery size. We do know it will feature BYD’s latest Flash Charging technology, which is capable of delivering up to 1,500kW, and is likely to use a three- or even four-motor setup.

Unlike other Denza models, the Denza Z is understood to be slated for a European and UK launch ahead of going on sale in its native China.
