The Renault 5 was the UK’s best-selling EV in July as the French brand celebrated continued success with its all-electric models.
The latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that EV sales were up again last month – hitting a record volume for the month – with Renault leading the way.
As well as the Renault 5’s individual success, Renault was the UK’s best-selling retail EV brand in July – selling directly to private buyers rather than fleets or businesses.
In total, more than half of all Renault sales in July were pure EV, highlighting the brand’s focus and success with its current range of electric models. Along with the Renault 5, which has scooped multiple awards across Europe, the brand offers the Megane, Scenic and Renault 4, along with its range of electric commercial vehicles.
Next year will also see the launch of the new Renault Twingo, which will sit beneath the Renault 5 as the brand’s new sub-£20,000 entry-level EV, along with the Renault 4 Plein Sud convertible.

Adam Wood, managing director of Renault UK, commented: “Renault continues to prove that if you build desirable cars then people will want them regardless of how they are powered.
“Renault 5 captures that perfectly. It appeals to both the head and the heart, combining standout design with everyday affordability. More than 17,000 have now been sold in the UK and, once again last month, it was the UK’s best-selling electric vehicle.
“That success is being repeated across our EV range. Together, Renault 5, Renault 4, Renault Megane and Renault Scenic topped the UK’s retail EV sales charts, with more than half of our registrations for the month fully electric. We have more momentum to come, too, with Renault 4 plein sud and Renault Twingo launching.
“While the trajectory towards 80% of car and 70% of van registrations being EV by 2030 remains incredibly challenging, we are invested in making progress as fast as we can, building on the leadership of launching Europe’s first mass-market EV more than a decade ago to ensure continued growth.”
