New 2025 MG4 EV breaks cover in China
MG has revealed its 2025 MG4 EV in China ahead of the car’s global launch later this year.
The all-new hatchback is bigger but lighter than before and brings a softer look inspired by the radical Cyberster roadster and the hybrid MG3.
The new car replaces the original MG4, which was only launched in 2022 and has proved a significant success thanks to its low price and practical size.
The 2025 MG4 EV is around 10cm longer than the outgoing car, with an extra 4.5cm in the wheelbase. That moves it slightly closer to the soon-to-retire MG5 and could suggest it will act as a replacement for both cars in the range, sitting beneath the inbound MGS5 SUV. It could also mean a price increase from the current £26,995.
For 2025, MG has dropped the angular shark-nosed look of the MG4 and adopted a more curvy design. The front end is softer and less aggressive and the rear is also more rounded, with smaller arrow-shaped tail lights and a full width lightbar across the tailgate. The prominent black cladding along the doors has also gone, given a more cohesive and traditional look.

MG hasn’t announced technical details but filings shared by the Chinese ministry of industry reveal that homologation models it has tested use a 161bhp motor. That’s slightly less powerful than the current entry-level car, but at 1,415kg, the new model is a massive 240kg lighter. That suggests performance and range shouldn’t suffer.
There’s no word on battery technology or capacity but the current car uses 51khW, 64kWh and 77kWh LFP batteries to offer ranges between 218 and 323 miles. It’s likely any new model will match or improve on that. It’s expected that alongside the 161bhp rear-mounted motor there will be additional powertrain options to replace the 201bhp and 242bhp variants. It is not clear if a replacement for the 429bhp MG4 XPower is on the cards.

MG also hasn’t indicated when the 2025 MG4 will arrive in the UK but we’d expect it in the second half of the year ready to challenge models ranging from high-spec Renault 5s to the Renault Megane, Cupra Born and Citroen E-C4.
