Instavolt opens ‘landmark’ renewable-powered charging ‘Superhub’ with exclusive cheaper charging

Instavolt has opened a massive new ultra-rapid charging ‘Superhub’ in Winchester, offering a special ‘launch edition’ tariff.

From April 1, the Superhub – located near the A34 and close to junction 9 of the M3 – will benefit from an exclusive off-peak charging rate of 50p per-kilowatt hour between 7pm and 7am.

At the opening of the Superhub, Instavolt also announced a nationwide extension of its off-peak tariff hours, meaning users can charge their EV at a reduced rate of 54p/kWh from 8pm to 7am; a significant decrease from its cost of 85p/kWh during peak hours.

The recently-opened site is Instavolt’s largest thus far, and is also its first to be fully powered by renewable energy. The site features a total of 44 160kW chargers and integrates an on-site solar farm with battery storage technology into its power supply.

The solar farm features 870 solar panels, while the overall site is powered by an energy mix of solar, renewable grid power, and a 4MWh battery storage system allowing for the efficient use and deployment of renewable energy.

This latest Instavolt site continues to UK’s positive start to 2025 in terms of public EV charging facilities. According to a report published by ZapMap earlier this month, there are now over 75,000 public EV charging devices across the country; a 32% year-on-year increase from 2024.

“The Winchester Superhub isn’t just a charging hub – it’s a flagship site that sets a new standard for ultra-rapid EV charging,” said Instavolt CEO, Delvin Lane. “As our largest and most advanced site to date, it delivers industry-leading reliability at an unprecedented scale, ensuring drivers can charge quickly and with confidence.

“This site is also a milestone in innovation, marking our first-ever location where we are generating our own renewable energy – pushing the boundaries of sustainability and self-sufficiency in EV charging.

“Above all, we are redefining what EV drivers can expect when they charge – seamless, ultra-rapid, and future-proofed charging that makes the switch to electric easier, faster, and more accessible than ever before.”

Instavolt’s latest Superhub also features drive-through bays for larger vehicles and towing set-ups, extra-long van bays, plus dedicated accessible charging spaces. There is also a Starbucks, 24/7 bathroom facilities, and a play park.

Despite the positive trend seen within the UK’s public charging infrastructure, the Public Affairs Committee has said that while the country is on track to meet its target of having 300,000 public chargers nationwide by 2030, further work needs to be done to de-concentrate them away from London and the surrounding areas. According to a report published by the UK’s spending watchdog, 43% of all public chargers can be found in the capital.
