Nico Rosberg’s RXR bows out of Extreme E as series prepares for hydrogen era

Rosberg X Racing (RXR), the Extreme E team owned by former Formula One champion Nico Rosberg, has confirmed it will leave the electric off-road series at the close of 2024.

The announcement follows in the wake of Lewis Hamilton’s X44 exit and aligns with the upcoming transition to Extreme H in 2025, which will feature hydrogen-powered vehicles.

RXR’s motorsport roots date back to Team Rosberg, founded by Nico’s father Keke, the 1982 Formula One World Champion. Since Extreme E’s debut in 2021, RXR has enjoyed significant success, taking the inaugural championship and another title in 2023.

Reflecting on this decision, Rosberg said: “Building RXR wasn’t just about racing; it was about creating a purpose-driven team that could make a real difference. From our championship wins to our environmental and equality initiatives, we’ve accomplished so much together. While it’s bittersweet to close this chapter, I am proud of what we’ve achieved.”

Maximilian Wasler, RXR’s director of commercial operations, emphasised the team’s unique blend of competition and conscience, noting: “It’s rare to find a team so committed to winning and making a difference. I’m proud of our achievements and look forward to seeing how the legacy of RXR will inspire future endeavours.”

RXR has been at the forefront of championing sustainability and equality in motorsport, closely aligned with Extreme E’s mission to spotlight environmental issues and promote gender balance. Although the team will not be present for the hydrogen-powered relaunch, the series remains focused on greener racing technologies and innovation.

Hamilton’s X44 team, which left the series at the start of 2024, also praised the “bigger conversation” around sustainability that Extreme E helped ignite. In its farewell statement, X44 highlighted its achievements both on the track and in championing opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to thrive.
