Volvo EX60 scheduled for January 2026 launch

The all-electric Volvo EX60 will arrive in January next year, the Swedish manufacturer has confirmed.

While the only official images of the EX60 are a social media teaser, it is expected that its family-sized SUV will match the dimensions of its best-selling, yet-ageing XC60 sibling, while its design will be influenced by the brand’s all-electric EX30 crossover and its full-sized Volvo EX90 SUV .

As such, it is expected that the EX60 will adopt an angular-yet-contemporary appearance, with eight-bit-esque versions of the ‘Thor’s Hammer’ design headlights Volvo has used since the mid-to-late 2010s, plus a blanked off grille.

The EX60 will be the first Volvo to be built on the brand’s EV-only SPA3 platform, the successor to the SPA architecture underpinning the EX90. SPA3 is a platform developed solely by Volvo rather than one shared with other carmakers owned by parent company, Geely.

SPA3’s modularity will serve as the basis of larger and smaller Volvo cars in the future as its allows the Swedish manufacturer to bring manufacturing costs down by using the same basic electronic architecture and software stack. In short, it ensures there is no repeat of work across its model line-up and is not dissimilar to Tesla’s production philosophy.

The upcoming Volvo EX60 will be the first Volvo to be built using megacasting, a relatively new technology in the automotive industry. Megacasting means entire sections of the car can be made as a single unit as opposed to using multiple parts. Alongside Volvo, other car brands using the megacasting construction method are Tesla, as well as several Chinese manufacturers including Xpeng, Nio, and Zeekr.

The upcoming EX60 very much adheres to Volvo’s contemporary SUV design language

It is reported that this will lead to the EX60’s rear floor weighing between 15 and 20% less than a traditional stamped equivalent and provide better better safety and durability. In terms of production efficiency, a megacasted floor takes 120 seconds to built as opposed to a full hour for a multi-stamped piece.

When the Volvo EX60 arrives, it will rival the likes of the Porsche Macan Electric, the Audi Q6 e-tron, and the next-gen BMW iX3. As of January 2026, Europe’s Volvo EV range will comprise the EX30, EC40, EX40, EX60, ES90, and EX90. In China, the Swedish carmaker also offers its EM90 MPV as part of its line-up.
