Volvo brings EX30 production to Europe

Volvo has begun manufacturing its small, all-electric EX30 SUV at its factory in Ghent, Belgium. In doing so, the Swedish carmaker has created around 350 new jobs, bringing the facility’s total of employees to 6,600.

The Volvo EX30 debuted at the end of 2023 and is built on parent company Geely’s bespoke, all-electric SEA2 platform. Until production started at the Ghent factory, the EX30 was produced at the Volvo plants in China and Malaysia.

According to Volvo, the decision to make the EX30 in Ghent was driven by its desire to bolster its position in the European premium EV market. Alongside the EX30, already-existing Volvo EVs include the EX90, EX40, EC40, and the newly-released ES90 saloon.

Since the decision to begin EX30 production in Ghent was taken, Volvo has invested over 200 million in the facility. The funding has seen the addition of a completely new car platform, the installation of almost 600 new or refurbished robots, an extended battery hall, plus new production and assembly lines for doors and batteries respectively.

The shift also aligns with the European Union’s sustainability and competitiveness agenda, aimed at driving innovation and EV tech, plus job creation. Between them, Volvo’s Swedish Torslanda plant and the Ghent facility manufacture 10 of the brand’s electric and hybrid models for European and export markets.

Stefan Fesser, the Volvo Ghent plant manager said: “Following a decision in autumn 2023 to bring production of the EX30 to Ghent, we were able to industrialise the new model in record time. Thanks to the engagement and collaboration of the entire Ghent team, we cut the industrialisation time in half.

“Today, we are extremely proud to welcome the EX30 and demonstrate that new technology and innovation enable us to react more flexibly to market demands.”

The Ghent factory will also produce the upcoming EX30 Cross Country; a more rugged take on the critically-acclaimed EX30, which has won several Car of The Year awards since its arrival. When it goes on sale in the UK this summer, the EX30 Cross Country will be priced from £47,000; a significant premium over the £33,060 entry-level EX30.
