Stellantis hits 2024 ZEV mandate targets for cars and vans

Vauxhall, Peugeot and Citroen parent group Stellantis says it achieved the new EV sales targets for cars and vans set out in the UK’s ZEV mandate.

The automotive giant, which also owns Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, DS and Maserati, announced that it hit both the 22% sales mix for passenger cars and the 10% mix for vans by the end of 2024, making it one of the few manufacturers to do so.

It did this entirely through new vehicle sales, rather than resorting to carbon trading or other methods of compliance, selling 39,492 cars in 2024. That was a 59% increase on its sales in 2023 and gave the group a 10.3% share of the electric car market.

At the same time, it sold 7,821 electric vans in 2024 – as many as the second and third placed manufacturers combined, giving it more than a third of the electric van market.

Across its 11 passenger and commercial brands, Stellantis sells 30 different EVs in the UK, ranging from the Citroen Ami to the Maserati Grecale Folgore. Among its biggest successes in 2024 were Peugeot, which doubled its EV sales and Jeep, which saw a 193% growth, with a quarter of all its sales being the all-electric Avenger.

Eurig Druce, group managing director, Stellantis UK, said: “2024 saw more people than ever purchase an EV and I’d like to thank our customers who have decided to switch to electric with one of our brands and also to our incredible UK retailer network for making it happen.”

He added that the group welcomed the government’s commitment to a 2030 phase-out of new ICE cars and the recent consultation on the ZEV mandate.

However, he warned that the upcoming targets would be hard to achieve without government incentives for private buyers. He noted: “Despite offering a very comprehensive line-up of popular electric cars and vans, and a strong will and focus on making our EVs as attainable as possible, the steep trajectories of the ZEV mandate are out of step from current demand.

“Put simply, if the UK is to achieve its transport emission ambitions, and for EVs to represent 80% of new cars sold in 2030, then consumers are going to need more encouragement from government to do so.”
