Vauxhall goes off-road with Frontera Gravel edition

Vauxhall has unveiled a one-off ‘Gravel’ edition of its all-electric Frontera SUV ahead of its public debut at XS Carnight at Wörthersee on Friday, May 30th.

The Vauxhall Frontera Gravel was co-developed with Blackfish Graphics and tuning firm XS Engineering. While no mechanical changes have been made to the Frontera EV’s 44kWh battery and front-mounted, 113bhp electric motor, the Gravel benefits from a series of aesthetic updates over the standard car.

Borbet has supplied a set of blacked-out 16-inch seven-spoke wheels, while BF Goodrich brings the knobbly tyres for additional grip on loose surfaces. Further equipment includes a front bumper-mounted winch, and a Thule Canyon XT roof rack cabled to the bonnet. Both components benefit from rally car-spec light bars.

Amplifying the car’s rugged aesthetic is a ‘Desert Stone’ foil wrap, which is contrasted by a black bonnet, roof, window surrounds, and lower door impact protectors. Opel says that the orange detailing on the bumper, mirror caps, and logo is to help with off-road visibility.

While a rough ‘n ready version of the Frontera isn’t in the immediate pipeline, Vauxhall and parent company Stellantis haven’t completely dismissed the idea for the future.

“The new Vauxhall Frontera is already standout,” said Rebecca Reinermann, the vice president of marketing for Vauxhall and Opel said. “It is rugged, practical, and perfect for families and everyday adventures.

But with the Vauxhall Frontera Gravel show car, we’ve pushed the limits, imagining a tougher, more daring, trailblazing version. This concept is built to fire up our fanbase and test the demand for a bolder, more rugged Frontera in the future. It’s all about freedom, adventure, excitement and pushing boundaries.”

The Vauxhall Frontera Gravel isn’t the only electric SUV concept with a sense of humour to be recently unveiled by the brand. The Mokka GSE Rally is the first all-electric rally car to be built to the FIA’s new all-electric eRally5 regulations.
