Used EV sales at record levels says auction specialist BCA
Leading vehicle remarketer BCA has reported record sales of electric vehicles at the start of 2025.
In its first full trading week of 2025, the specialist sold almost 1,000 electric vehicles, including passenger cars and vans. It said that the record-breaking start to the year continued a trend seen throughout 2024 and marks a near-50% increase on sales in July 2024.
This year BCA expects to sell ‘well over’ 40,000 EVs as supply of and demand for used electric vehicles continues to grow exponentially. It estimates that the volume of second-hand EVs reaching the remarketing sector is doubling each year.
BCA attributed the growth in demand to increasing dealer and consumer confidence in EVs and the fact that many used EVs are now priced on a par or cheaper than their ICE equivalent.
BCA COO Stuart Pearson commented: “EV volumes in our online auctions continue to grow significantly year-on-year and we continue to invest and refine the remarketing process to drive optimal value in this sector.
“Whilst the remarketing basics remain relevant regardless of fuel or vehicle type, in this sector in particular, ensuring that customers have all of the available information when buying or selling will help to drive the best results.”
In November 2024, BCA introduced a battery health check service on EVs. This grades the battery’s health and provides dealers with a full breakdown of the remaining usable capacity of a car’s drive battery, and identifies issues such as faulty modules within the battery. This data can then be shared with potential customers.
Pearson added: “A record broken in the first full trading week of the year certainly sets the tone for trading and provides credibility to the belief that customer perception on used EVs is changing for the good.
“With returns expected to lift significantly this year, we continue to invest in the infrastructure and supporting services to create the best possible wholesale market for used EVs.”
