Smart has given the clearest look yet at its new Smart #2 city car, through a series of murals around the world.
The #2 is the spiritual successor to the iconic Fortwo compact car and marks the brand’s return to its innovative small car roots after a series of larger SUVs.
Ahead of its global debut at the Paris Motor Show this October more details of its design have been revealed in the murals across Shanghai, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires and Melbourne.
More artwork is due to be unveiled in Berlin and Paris in the build up to the car’s motor show reveal.
The latest art builds on previous teaser images and confirms that the #2 sticks closely to the look of its famous predecessor.
The tiny two-door body boasts a short bonnet, upright front end with large characterful lights, and wheels pushed out to the very corners to maximise interior space. Like the original Fortwo, the rear is also almost vertical, helping create a spacious two-seater cabin.
“The smart #2 is the evolution of a revolution,” said. Kang Yi, Global CMO of Smart. “We designed this vehicle to bring playfulness, premium sophistication, and effortless agility back to the modern urban jungle.”
The new #2 is built on a bespoke Electric Compact Architecture developed by Geely. Smart is co-owned by the Chinese NEV giant and by Mercedes-Benz, which was behind the original Fortwo and responsible for the design of the #2.
Full technical details will be announced at the Paris show, but Smart has already said that the #2 will cover 186 miles on a charge and can be topped up from 20-80% in 20 minutes. It has also confirmed the #2 will offer vehicle-to-load charging technology.
With a predicted length of less than 2.8m, the Smart #2 will be the smallest electric car on sale when it arrives in showrooms next year. The only smaller EVs are quadricycles such as the Citroen Ami and Fiat Topolino.
It tiny size is set to see the #2 compete with the Renault Twingo, Citroen 2CV and Kia EV1 in the A-segment. While there is no word on pricing yet, Smart says the #2 will bring new premium standards to the segment, which could see it edge closer to larger models such as the Renault 5 and Citroen E-C3 on price.
