Porsche Taycan recall: used model sales halted over fire concerns

Porsche UK has reportedly told its nationwide dealer network to halt sales of its first-generation Taycan EV, after issuing a recall on certain models.

According to Car Dealer, retailers were told to withdraw selected cars from sale until a battery software update could be rolled out.

However, the German carmaker told Autoblog that the report was “greatly exaggerated,” and a limited number of just 135 Taycans produced from 2019 to 2024 have been recalled. Meanwhile, the rest remain on sale. The pause on sales is understood to be in order to implement a battery software update, which will become available for this first-gen Taycan towards the end of this month.

In an official statement, Porsche UK said: “Enhanced battery monitoring software is anticipated to become available for first-generation Taycan models towards the end of June. With its imminent arrival, we’ve advised our retail partners not to sell a small, specific batch of first generation Taycan models until the software update is live.”

It’s not yet known whether any Taycans outside of the official Porsche dealer work have been affected.

This latest action is said to be related to the UK’s Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) ARB6 recall from November 2024. The recall stated that “a short circuit within the battery modules during the vehicle’s service life cannot be ruled out under certain circumstances, which could lead to thermal events and later to a fire in the vehicle”.

It is understood that the incoming software update will detect if there are problems with the cells, and display a warning to owners in the event this may happen. Porsche is believed to have removed the affected cars from sale to wait for the updates.

Porsche’s decision to remove the 135-strong batch of cars from sale garnered praise from the DVSA, who commented: “Road safety is our absolute priority, and getting recalled vehicles fixed promptly has a huge benefit for all road users.

“There is an active safety recall on Porsche Taycans produced between 2019 and 2024 for which the manufacturer is in the final stages of developing a remedy. This involves concerns related to the vehicle’s electrical propulsion system.”

Nonetheless, this latest event is the latest in a line of recalls for the Porsche Taycan. Previously, Zuffenhausen’s all-electric family sport car  has been recalled across the UK for – amongst others – brake hose replacements, problems with welding and suspension, and replacing cell blocks in its high-voltage battery.

In the United States, the Taycan has also undergone a number of recalls. As recently as April this year, Porsche recalled 9,735 Taycans as their airbags may not go off in the event of a crash. According to MotorSafety.org, October 2024 saw a recall of 27,527 Taycans made between 2020 to 2024 due to concerns over battery fires.
