Polestar to use V2X tech to power Danish smart homes

Polestar and charge point operator (CPO) Clever will begin testing V2X (vehicle-to-everything) technology in selected smart homes across Denmark in a joint technical pilot project starting this autumn.

The scheme between the Swedish performance EV manufacturer and the Danish CPO marks the first time a complete V2X solution has been rolled out in Denmark.

V2X is a form of bi-directional charging that uses the Polestar 4‘s battery to power the home during peak energy demand periods via vehicle-to-home (V2H) functionality. It will also send power back to the national electricity grid during maximum usage periods via vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality to stabilise the network.

In ‘islanding mode’, the car will act as a backup power supply to the home in the event of a power outage. According to Clever, a fully charged EV can keep an average home running for several days, depending on how much energy it uses.

Henrik Bang, the managing director of Polestar Denmark, described the project as putting “consumers and their cars at the centre of the green energy transition”.

“In the future, the electric vehicle will not only transport people, but also energy,” he continued. “If electricity prices are high or the energy supply fails, the vehicle can become your power bank for the home or grid, reducing everyday energy costs and, in many cases, supporting increased use of renewable energy.”

Christina Fink, Clever CEO, added: “We are now taking V2X from a vision of the future to everyday reality.

“Denmark will be one of the first places where the electric car not only uses electricity but can also deliver it back to the home and the electricity grid when needed,” she said. “This is the beginning of a new chapter, where the electric vehicle battery can both create value for the electric vehicle owner and strengthen the energy system.”

The Polestar 4 does not yet support bidirectional charging or V2X as standard, but it is expected to be rolled out in a future over-the-air (OTA) software update. Meanwhile, Clever expects to introduce its first commercial V2X solution as early as 2027.
