Polestar Energy expands in Europe after UK pilot success

EV brand Polestar has rolled out its Polestar Energy home charging service to 11 new European markets.

Following a successful 2024 pilot scheme in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, Polestar Energy has now been rolled out to customers in 11 new territories – Switzerland, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Spain

Customers in each country can now take advantage of smart charging and solar power feed-in while those in Belgium and Switzerland can also enjoy the grid rewards offered in the UK and Netherlands.

Polestar Energy offers its users more efficient and cheaper home charging and is paired with Polestar Charge. Polestar Charge has over 875,000 charging public charging stations across Europe, including access to Tesla’s rapid charge Supercharger network.

The Polestar Energy app is free to download in markets where the programme is active, and it allows customers to decide when they want to use their car and set their own charging level. The system will automatically select the most cost-efficient charging periods.

By balancing the demand and charging when demand is lower, the result is cheaper energy costs. This comes at source in the form of a grid reward for customers, or as lower energy prices when receiving their electricity bill.

In some markets, the reduction in charging costs can be as much as 30% less, with up to 300 (£253) savings per year possible thanks to additional grid rewards.

“A 30% saving on charging costs at home can make a big difference, and so we’re rolling this offer out at scale, with more markets to come later this year,” said Polestar CEO, Michael Lohscheller. “When we add vehicle-to-grid capabilities in Polestar’s line-up it will add even more value to our customers.”

Later in 2025, Polestar will introduce bi-directional charging with vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home capabilities. It will debut on the Polestar 3 SUV, and allow customers to use their vehicle as energy storage, and return excess energy to the grid or power their home.

To facilitate bi-directional charging, Polestar has partnered with Zaptec to provide a compatible homecharger. Pricing for this bi-directional charger will be announced by Polestar, which has announced it will be made available as part of an exclusive offer including installation.
