MG 4X launches with semi-solid state battery… and underwhelming range

The MG 4X has arrived in China with a semi-solid state battery (SSB), as it seeks to take the fight to the BYD Atto 2 and the Kia EV3.

Ostensibly a crossover version of the electric-only MG4 Urban hatchback, the MG 4X measures 4.4 metres long, 1.8m wide, and 1.6m tall. While these dimensions are nothing new in the world of all-electric crossovers, the MG 4X’s semi-solid state battery is.

Full technical details are yet to be confirmed. However, MG says that all 4Xs will benefit from this latest battery technology, which uses solid and liquid-gel electrolytes instead of solely liquid ones to improve energy density and battery performance in extreme weather conditions.

Another reason why SSBs are widely considered the ‘next big thing’ in EV tech is due to the faster charging times and their extra range. In February 2026, Donut Lab achieved a 0-80% SSB charge time in under five minutes.

MG 4X profile

Last September, a Mercedes EQS achieved 749 miles on a single charge using an experimental solid-state unit.

However, the MG 4X’s semi-solid state battery achieves 317 miles from its 53.95kWh battery on the Chinese CLTC cycle, which tends to overestimate EV range.

When it comes to further tech, the MG 4X’s interior will be co-developed with Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo. The full reveal will be made public within a few months.

MG has yet to confirm whether or not it will sell the MG 4X in the UK. If it does arrive, it would be the seventh electric-only model in MG’s line-up alongside the MG4, MG4 Urban, MG S5, MG S6, plus the two premium IM5 and IM6 models.

Looking to the future, MG confirmed a rival to the Renault 5 and the Citroen e-C3. Named the MG2, the electric B-segment hatchback will arrive in around 18 months, and is expected to cost around £18,000 – roughly the same as the upcoming Renault Twingo and Volkswagen ID.1.
