Lego Renault 5 Turbo 3E races 10,000 steps closer to reality

A fan-built Lego Renault 5 Turbo 3E has garnered 10,000 supporters on the Lego Ideas pitching platform, just 44 days since submission.

The creation of UK engineer Dave Collins, the Lego tribute to the all-electric Renault 5 Turbo 3E, is already on the cusp of entering production after garnering 10,000 votes from Lego fans globally in just 44 days.

To put the Lego R5 Turbo 3E’s meteoric popularity into context, projects are usually given a maximum period of 32 months to garner the same level of support to be considered by the Lego Ideas judging panel.

Collins described watching the Lego Renault 5 Turbo 3E’s popularity grow as “surreal”.

“I knew there was something special about the car when I started building it, but I never expected this kind of reaction,” he explained. “Watching the numbers climb so quickly has been surreal – every time I checked, it felt like another big jump.

“What’s really struck me is how global it’s been. People from all over the world are getting behind it, sharing it, voting for it – it’s turned into something far bigger than just my model. Hitting 10,000 supporters this quickly is incredible.”

Renault UK’s managing director, Adam Wood, was equally as enthusiastic. He added: “We all fell in love with Dave’s creation when we first saw it – and to see that love resonate around the world has been incredible.

“To reach the point where Dave’s model will now be reviewed for production is a fantastic achievement, and it says a lot about the connection people have with the Renault 5 and the excitement around the Renault 5 Turbo 3E.

“There’s a real sense of fun and creativity at the heart of this project, just as there is with the full-size version.”

The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is an all-electric reimagination of the Renault 5 Turbo Group B rally car from the 1980s. Priced from £135,000, the French manufacturer’s “mini-supercar” packs 547bhp and courtesy of 3,540lb ft of torque from its two in-wheel rear motors.

Just 1,980 R5 Turbo 3Es will be made, referencing the production year of the original. If the Lego version makes it to production, we expect it to be somewhat less exclusive and more affordable. The Turbo 3E will make its first public appearance at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it will be joined by Collins’ brick version on the Renault stand.
