Hyundai has added a range-topping trim level to its all-electric Ioniq 9 line-up, dubbed the ‘Calligraphy Black Ink’.

Priced from £79,320 for the seven-seat variant, the Calligraphy Black Ink is the fourth model in the Ioniq 9 line-up. Despite not adding to the previous flagship Calligraphy’s generous equipment levels, the Black Ink introduces a series of aesthetic changes.

Like Volvo’s ‘Black Edition‘ models, internal and external blacked-out design elements distinguish the Calligraphy Black Ink models from the rest of the range.

The Hyundai logo at the front of the three-row SUV is finished in matte black, while the trim-specific 21-inch machined aluminium alloy wheels are coloured in gloss black. Around the rear of the car, the gloss black elements continue with various details.

When it comes to colour options, Hyundai only offers the Ioniq 9 Calligraphy Black Ink in either Abyss Black Pearl or Serenity White Pearl; both of which hint at a pearlescent finish.

Inside, the Ioniq 9 Calligraphy Black Ink is not hugely different from the regular Calligraphy model. The Nappa leather seats remain, but are finished in black, as is the four-spoke leather steering wheel. The real aluminium trim that runs the length of the dash is also blacked out.

Like the standard Calligraphy car, Hyundai will swap out the Calligraphy Black Ink’s middle bench for individually swivelling captain’s chairs at extra cost. This layout reduces the number of seats from seven to six, and ushers in Hyundai’s Universal Island 2.0: an adjustable centre console that can slide backwards up to 19cm to make it more accessible to those seated in the back. The six-seater is priced at £80,320.

Introduced last year, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 is another multiple-award-winning EV from the South Korean manufacturer, and has claimed accolades for – amongst others – the World’s Best Large SUV, Best Seven-Seater, and Best 7-Seater Electric SUV.

Pricing for the Ioniq 9 starts from £64,995 for the entry-level Premium trim. Mid-tier Ultimate comes with a £73,495 price tag, while the Calligraphy increases to £75,795.

Across the Ioniq 9 range, Hyundai offers just one battery choice – a 110kWh unit mated to 800V electrical architecture. This makes it the South Korean firm’s answer to the Volvo EX90, BMW iX, and other premium, electric-only SUVs.

The Calligraphy Black Ink gets the same twin-motor, 421bhp powertrain as the Calligraphy. This means it can manage an official range of up to 372 miles on a single charge, and can be topped up from 10% to 80% in 24 minutes courtesy of a fast-charging speed of 233kW. Despite tipping the scales at 2.7 tonnes, the all-wheel drive (AWD) Ioniq 9 Calligraphy Black Ink manages a 0-62mph time of 5.2 seconds.
