Here comes the sun: Nissan celebrates Clean Energy Day 2026 with solar-powered Ariya concept
Nissan has unveiled a one-off, solar-panelled version of its all-electric Ariya SUV to mark Clean Energy Day 2026.
A collaboration between Nissan and Dutch solar mobility specialists, Lightyear, the driving-on-sunshine Ariya comes with 3.8m² of Lightyear-made, high‑efficiency, polymer and glass-based solar panels integrated into its hood, roof, and boot.
These photovoltaic panels convert sunlight into DC power, which is fed back to the car’s battery, reducing the number of times it needs to be plugged into an external charger.
The self-charging system is managed via an advanced controller designed by the Nissan Advanced Product and Powertrain Planning teams.
Following real-world testing, the solar panels were found to extend the Ariya’s maximum 330-mile range by 14.3 miles under WLTP conditions. In cities such as Barcelona with high levels of sunlight, the photovoltaic system extended the Ariya’s range by 10.9 miles.
Year-round sunlight averages showed that the additional solar panels would improve the Ariya’s range by 6.3 miles per day in London, 8.2 miles in Dubai, and 11.7 miles in New Delhi.
Despite being a Clean Energy Day 2026 one-off for now, Nissan’s ePowertrain vice president, Shunsuke Shigemoto, said the solar-powered Ariya provides an insight into the Japanese carmaker’s future EV programme.
“This concept is not just a technical milestone, it’s a vision of how Nissan intends to lead the next phase of electric mobility,” he stated. “The solar‑powered Ariya concept embodies Nissan’s belief that innovation and sustainability must move forward hand‑in‑hand.
“By exploring how vehicles can generate their own renewable energy, we are opening the door to new opportunities for customers’ greater freedom, reduced charging dependency, and a cleaner future.”
Nissan’s strategic partner, Renault, has also been experimenting with solar power. Last year, the French manufacturer revealed that its Emblème ‘rolling laboratory’ came with roof-integrated solar panels to boost the car’s 40kwh battery and act as a supplementary charging system.
