Updated Volvo FH Aero truck comes with 370-mile range and megawatt charging

Volvo will begin taking orders for its upcoming FH Aero Electric truck later this year, with the new truck offering a 370-mile range and charging rates of up to 1,000kW.

The Volvo FH Aero Electric truck has been designed for long-haul transport, which is one of the most polluting segments of truck transport CO2 emissions. Along with its 1000kW load capacity, the FH Aero Truck has a CCS2 charging rate of up to 350kW, meaning it can be charged from 20% – 80% in around 40 minutes.

The FH Aero Truck’s 370-mile range comes from Volvo’s new e-axle driveline, which allows for the addition of up to eight batteries totalling a maximum of 780kWh.

“This is a real breakthrough in zero-emission transport. Now, transport companies can operate really long distances with electric trucks without having to compromise on productivity,” said Volvo Trucks president, Roger Alm. The superfast charging and high payload capacity make this a very competitive solution.”

“Electric trucks in long-haul operation will make an important contribution to reduce CO2 in our industry, since this is where you can save the most per truck. This is positive news for transport companies and for society.”

The FH Aero Truck is configured as a 6×2 tag axle. When combined with a standard tri-axle semi-trailer, it has a gross combination weight 44 tonnes. Volvo will also sell the FH Aero Electric with a standard cab.

“We have the industry’s most complete offer of electric truck transport solutions, and we have more than five years of experience in supporting thousands of customers, big and small, to go electric,” continued Alm. Volvo Trucks is the go-to company for transport operators that want to start their decarbonisation journey.”

The Volvo FH Aero Truck will directly rival the Mercedes eActros 600, which has a 310-mile range, but can support 400kW charging. Like the Volvo, the Mercedes will also be able to support charging speeds of up to a megawatt as infrastructure develops.
