Chris Rea’s all-electric classic Mini heads to auction

It might be a bit early to be driving home for Christmas, but EV and music fans can score a one-off piece of history when Chris Rea’s electrified classic Mini goes up for sale in February.

The unique retro-fitted machine is expected to fetch between £30,000 and £35,000 when it goes under the hammer at Iconic Auctioneers ‘Race Retro’ sale on February 22, with all proceeds going to the domestic abuse charity, Refuge.

The repowered 1989 Mini was commissioned for Rea by Mini’s parent company BMW in 2023 to celebrate 45 years since he penned the classic Driving Home for Christmas while stuck in traffic in a Mini.

The car was converted from ICE to EV by Recharged Heritage using a drop-in conversion kit from EV powertrain specialist Fellten.

Rea’s bespoke car has a power output of 99bhp and produces 129lb ft of torque, which gives it a 0-60mph time of eight seconds. A suitably ‘mini’ 19kWh battery has a range of approximately 100 miles.

The battery pack is finished with a few of personal flourishes from Rea, including a plate depicting a 45rpm vinyl record and the lyrics of his 1978 hit song Driving Home for Christmas engraved across the top.

Rea’s signature is also engraved on a plaque close to the driver’s doorsill outlining the car’s original 1989 build year and the year of its EV conversion.

The cabin retains the original Mini’s centrally positioned analogue gauges. A retro-inspired gear selector has also been added along with a period-style Mini charging plug cap. The body is finished in midnight black, with smoky grey rear lights and “Rea-Recharged” bonnet stripes.

Under the skin, Recharged Heritage has upgraded the car’s suspension, brakes, and tyres with its sports package.

“I’m incredibly proud to see this Mini, which holds such personal significance being auctioned for such a vital cause,” said Rea. “Driving Home for Christmas has always been a special song for me, and to know that the proceeds from this car will go towards supporting those affected by domestic abuse gives it even more meaning.”

Rea penned Driving Home for Christmas on Christmas Eve 1978, from the passenger seat of an original Mini while his wife, Joan, drove the five-hour journey from Abbey Road Studios in London to their then-home in Middlesbrough, which was beset by heavy snow and tailbacks.

If you’re considering bringing this rock star’s Mini to your home, it’s essential to factor in the car shipping cost. This unique vehicle, with its rich history and personal touches, is not just a collector’s item but also a symbol of support for a meaningful cause. As you plan to bid on this electrified classic, understanding the logistics and expenses involved in shipping can help ensure a smooth transition from auction to your garage.
