BMW iX1 and iX2 get major range update

The BMW iX1 and iX2 have been given a range update to 318 miles thanks to new hardware and battery management software.

Both models benefit from the introduction of silicon-carbide semiconductor components in their power electronics, which convert direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC).

This new technology enables greater efficiency and reduced consumption, meaning the BMW iX1 eDrive 20 can travel up to 318 miles on a single charge, while xDrive30 cars will be able to cover up to 288 miles.

The larger iX2 eDrive20 now has a 318-mile range, while the xDrive30 model is capable of 294 miles. Both models will go on sale in February this year.

The iX1 and iX2 are not the only BMW Group products to be fitted with silicon-carbide parts. Just recently, Mini confirmed that the tech will be added to its all-electric Countryman E and Countryman E All4, which use the same electrical architecture as both BMW-badged cars.

The electric Mini Countryman E range has been boosted by 25 miles

The front-wheel drive Countryman E’s range is now up from 286 to 311 miles, while the all-wheel drive All4 cars pack a 290-mile range, 13 more than previously.

Despite the update, BMW has made no changes to the Countryman’s battery, meaning it remains at 66.5kWh. However, the new parts have upped its usable capacity from 64.6kWh to 65.2kWh. Its maximum charging speed remains at 130kW. Just like the electrical underpinnings, the battery is shared with the iX1 and iX2, meaning the two BMW models also enjoy a boost in usable capacity.

In 2026, the BMW Group has already rolled out its first ‘next-gen’ EV, the all-new iX3, which is the first all-electric BMW to be built on Munich’s ‘Neue Klasse’ electrical architecture.

Packing a 500-mile range, the mid-sized SUV will compete with the likes of the new Volvo EX60 and Mercedes GLC. Further Neue Klasse-based cars in the pipeline include a new electric 3 series dubbed the i3, and a quad-motor, 1000bhp M3, which will arrive in 2027.

In 2025, Munich’s all-electric stalwart, the BMW i4, also underwent an update, which improved range to a maximum range of 380 miles and a power boost to an M3 CS-shaming 593bhp.
