The BMW plant in Debrecen, Hungary, has manufactured its 50,000th Neue Klasse iX3, just nine months since the all-electric SUV entered production.
The achievement of 50,000 iX3s marks the fastest production time of any new BMW factory to date.
Opened in October 2025, the Debrecen site is the Munich-based manufacturer’s first dedicated EV plant, and its first production site to operate entirely without fossil fuels.
At present, the plant is the only BMW factory to build a vehicle based on the new 800V ‘Neue Klasse’ architecture. The upcoming BMW i3 will be built at its Munich site, while the iX5 will be manufactured at the Spartanburg factory, in South Carolina.
BMW Debrecen managed to achieve this rapid production record following the introduction of a second production run “well ahead of schedule” at the site in February this year. According to BMW, the plant “is on track to soon reach the next major milestone of 100,000 incoming orders”.
The German brand is one of several carmakers to pivot its EV production efforts towards the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region.
Long-term rival Mercedes builds the new all-electric C-Class at its Hungarian Kecskemet plant, while Ford manufactures three of its EVs across the border in Romania. Meanwhile, Toyota has pledged to produce its next EV in Czechia at its Kolin site.
BMW’s board member for production, Raymond Wittmann, was quick to praise Debrecen’s team of over 4,000 staff, and cited the factory as a cornerstone in BMW’s upscaling plans for the future.
“The 50,000th BMW iX3 underscores the capabilities of our plant in Debrecen: Never before have we built so many vehicles so quickly [at a new plant]. This milestone is the result of an outstanding team effort.
“Each of our plants benefits from launch experiences we have made at Plant Debrecen. By the end of 2027, we will launch 40 new or updated models. Efficiency, speed, and quality are crucial for the successful launch of all vehicles. Knowledge transfer between our production sites worldwide is a key lever.”
Site CEO and president, Hans-Peter Kemser, added: “The production of the 50,000th BMW iX3 reflects the dedication and expertise of our team. As the home of the first series-produced Neue Klasse model, Plant Debrecen is helping shape the future of BMW’s global production network.”
Upon arrival, the BMW iX3 was the UK’s first EV with a 500-mile range. Now on sale, the all-electric SUV is priced from £53,250 for the entry-level, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) iX3 40 model. Since its debut, the iX3 has garnered several accolades, including World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle 2026.
