Arnold Clark to offer battery health checks during servicing

One of the UK’s biggest car retailers has announced plans to carry out battery health checks for EV-owning customers

Arnold Clark is partnering with Moba to carry out comprehensive battery testing on fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars to give customers additional peace of mind.

Unlike other sellers, who offer the checks when selling used EVs, Arnold Clark will give customers the option of having a check carried out as part of their routine servicing.

Battery life and proof of a healthy state of charge are increasingly seen as a key element of selling on electric cars for the best possible price.

Arnold Clark’s aftersales director Scott Grant said that by providing health checks at any point in a car’s life, it would help reassure drivers and allow them to ensure the long-term health of their car’s battery.

He commented: ‘We have been actively promoting the benefits of EVs for several years and now Arnold Clark can offer battery health certificates as a valuable new addition to its aftersales offering.

“As battery health checks are not routinely included in all manufacturer service programmes, we want to offer customers the option of an additional battery health assessment during scheduled servicing, providing reassurance on the condition of their BEV or PHEV batteries.

“As EV technology evolves, more data becomes available, Moba’s solution captures and presents that data in a way that adds real value for both our customers and our business.”

Battery checks from companies such as Moba and Generational assess the high-voltage packs of EVs and PHEVs to determine how much usable capacity they have lost. They can also identify internal problems such as faulty cells before they cause any major problems, helping avoid expensive failures.

Recent results shared by Generational show that the average used EV in the UK retains 95% of its usable capacity and even cars at eight to nine years old have an average state of health of 85% – far above the usual 70% warranty threshold for cars of that age.

Alex Johns, Moba’s business development partner in the UK, added: “Moba is delighted to partner with Arnold Clark.

“Their extensive network will help us drive our mission to support the wider adoption of electric vehicles and promote the long-term health of their batteries.”
