Another milestone: Volkswagen delivers two millionth EV

Volkswagen has hit yet another milestone as part of its rebooted electrification strategy, after delivering its two millionth EV to a customer named Kirsten Vormbrock from Dresden, Germany.

The car in question was an ID.3 built at the German automotive giant’s EV-only ‘Transparent Factory’ in nearby Zwickau, which built some 212,000 EVs in 2025.

Launched in 2020, the ID.3 was VW’s first dedicated EV. While undergoing a tricky start to life due to software issues and VW’s well-documented and ill-fated use of haptic switches, the family hatch has become a best-seller in the UK and mainland Europe.

Yet with around 628,000 ID.3s delivered, it’s not VW’s most popular EV. That accolade goes to the ID.4 SUV, which has sold approximately 901,000 units in Europe, the United States, and China. It is worth noting, however, that its sibling, the ID.5 SUV coupé was quietly dropped from the line-up due to a lack of consumer interest.

VW ID Polo

Finally, the long-range ID.7 saloon and estate joined VW’s all-electric family in 2023. Both bodystyles have proven to be yet another success story for Wolfsburg, with 132,000 cars delivered.

Volkswagen aims to retain its position at the sharp end of the EV sales charts with the launch of the upcoming ID. Polo – one of four new compact models to be launched by VW in 2026.

According to Martin Sander, Volkswagen’s board member for sales, marketing, and after-sales, these upcoming, cheaper cars will be key to attracting a new demographic of buyers.

“These new models make electromobility accessible to even more customers,” he said. “Our aim is to introduce attractive, affordable electric vehicles for everyday use into the high-volume small car segment and, in so doing, take the next growth steps in our transformation.”

Upcoming all-electric models beyond the ID. Polo are set to include the ID. Polo GTI, the ID. Cross, and the ID. Every1. The ID.3 is also anticipated to undergo a major overhaul inside and out.
