East Kilbride Line Goes Electric with £144m Investment

Electric trains are now serving the East Kilbride to Glasgow route. The new investment has transformed one of the busiest transport routes in Scotland, with older diesel trains being replaced with eco-friendly electric trains, in a move to modernise the city’s infrastructure.

Diesel and steam trains are being phased out, but they have had a huge impact on our lives. The very first steam locomotive, which was invented in 1804, started a movement that didn’t just inspire new transport lines, but also entertainment and media. Agatha Christie based a lot of her novels on trains, with examples being Murder on the Orient Express and The Mystery of the Blue Train.

The 1896 French documentary, Train Pulling Into a Station, also had a big impact on filmmaking. In Train to Busan, trains also play a central role. Trains have also been a source of inspiration for iGaming. It’s easy to find new slots online that feature trains, with Slingo Money Train being an example. This is a newer format that combines slots and bingo. Classic slots like Fire Rail Express and Down the Rails also use steam trains as a way to showcase the marvel of their invention, and the high impact they have had on our world.

Examples like this show that trains don’t just help people to get from A to B; they also tell a much bigger story about how far we have come and how classic inventions have paved the way for more efficient, faster, and cleaner models. The line to East Kilbride not only runs cleaner than before, but it also runs quieter. The upgrade also moves beyond electrification.

Two New Stations have Been Built

Aside from the trains being fully electric, two new stations have also been built. There’s a new two-platform Hairmyres station, and the East Kilbride terminus has been redone as well. They now come with an accessible footbridge and step-free access. Network Rail has been working with SPL Powerlines to bring the project to life, with a celebratory journey made from East Kilbride.

Gerry McQuade, the director at Network Rail Scotland, has said that the project was about more than just improving the infrastructure of the city. It’s about moving the country towards a greener future where electrification takes priority. Not only is the train going to be faster, but it’s also able to forge stronger connections between towns and communities. There are hopes that the green upgrade is going to attract new passengers, while making the journey smoother for existing travellers.

22 km of overhead electrification, as well as extensive remodelling, has resulted in less pollution. ScotRail has also said that even though 75% of the services are going to be operated by the new greener trains, the remaining trains and services will still be using diesel trains for now. The company is in the process of procuring new electric trains for the fleet. There is no timescale for this service, and it could be years until we see the line being operated with 100% electric trains.
