Jaguar to announce production name of controversial Type 00 EV GT on May 12

Jaguar will confirm the name of its upcoming, all-electric GT on May 12, according to several reports.

Until now, the car has been known as the Type 00 – the name given to the divisive concept car revealed by the British brand in December 2024, and by its codename, X900. However, the production version will be renamed for its full reveal in September this year.

While the car promises to break away from the traditional Jaguar ‘wood and leather’ image through its new ‘Vibrant Modernism’ design language, it remains to be seen whether it will have an entirely new name or inherit an historic moniker in the way the F-Type followed the E-Type.

Jaguar Type 00 electric GT side profile

The 5.2-metre four-door GT is the first car to ride on the brand-new, electric-only, Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), designed specifically for the British carmaker’s upcoming three EVs.

The GT comes with an 850V electrical system paired with a 120kWh battery pack, promising 400 miles of range and an ultra-fast charging time of 350kW, allowing owners to add 200 miles of range in less than 15 minutes.

Powering the all-electric Jaaaaaag are three electric motors – one up front, and two at the rear. Combined, these yield in excess of 1,000bhp and an equally enormous 959 pound-feet of torque. For reference, this is more than a Bugatti Veyron.

Despite tipping the scales at 2,700kg, the yet-to-be-named Jaguar’s chassis gets twin-chamber air suspension and adaptive dampers to keep the weight in check. Wheels are sized at either 21 or 23 inches, and rear-wheel steering is standard to provide a wide turning circle.

When it goes on sale, Jaguar’s latest is said to be priced from between £120,000 and £140,000 as it chases a new, younger, well-heeled audience as part of its controversial electric-only rebrand.

Incidentally, the GT isn’t Jaguar’s first foray into the EV world. It produced the I-Pace SUV from 2018 to 2024, and an almost finished, all-electric XJ was scheduled until its cancellation at the 11th hour.
