Volkswagen unveils its latest electric vehicle: The ID.5 SUV

There’s a new member of Volkswagen’s ID family. Meet the ID.5, a sporty SUV coupé with over 300 miles of range.

Packed with a 77kWh battery, slightly more than the ID.4, the ID.5 offers a range of up to 323 miles and will also be offered in a sportier-GTX version.

Prices for the ID.5 will start from around £47,000 with specific pricing and availability to be confirmed next year.

With a choice of 172bhp and 201bhp motors, the ID.5 will be able to accelerate from 0-60mph 10.4sec and 8.4sec respectively, and thanks to its 135kW maximum charging rate, it will be able to recoup 80% of its range in just 30 minutes.

With an extra motor on the front axle, the ID.5 GTX model will also boast 295bhp whilst also shooting from 0-60mph in just over six seconds, whilst still maintaining a solid range of 304 miles.

“The ID.5 is electric, sporty and elegant. Our premium SUV coupé with all-electric drive marks another milestone in our Accelerate strategy,” said Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen CEO. “It offers locally carbon-neutral driving enjoyment for a discerning customer group. We are breaking into a completely new market segment with this model.”

By 2030, at least 70% of Volkswagen’s unit sales in Europe are expected to come from electric-only vehicles – that is equivalent to more than one million vehicles. To achieve these goals, Volkswagen is launching at least one electric vehicle onto the market every year. The CO2 emissions per vehicle are set to decrease by up to 40% by as soon as 2030.

At first glance

According to Volkswagen, the new e-SUV coupé “projects independence and uniqueness from every angle.”

The sporty aesthetic is achieved through a sleeker body design than the long, round ID.4 design, but the ID.5 compromises on just 12mm of headroom, making it just as spacious on the inside. And it promises to be just as practical, with a whopping 549L of boot capacity.

Seat covering materials vary depending on the interior version, with the optional Top Sports seats featuring a perforated ID logos at the top of the backrests.

The ultra-modern digital cockpit offers a new operating concept. The driver display and high-resolution multimedia system deliver an augmented reality head-up display, and also features the new ID. software 3.0. This software includes voice control and online access to information from the Cloud.

For atmospheric interior lighting, the Ambient Lighting feature offers a choice of up to 30 colours. We Connect services also provides the driver with real-time online traffic information, online map updates, information about charging stations, web radio and much more.

“The ID.5 is the body style of the future: aerodynamic, expressive, sporty and, thanks to MEB, with short overhangs,” said Jozef Kabaň, head of Volkswagen Design. “That’s how we have been able to ensure a spacious interior despite the dynamic roof line – this simply wasn’t possible before.”
