Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 get new Black Edition trim

Volkswagen has introduced an all-new Black Edition trim to its all-electric ID. 4 SUV and ID.5 SUV coupé line-up, bringing more than £4,000 worth of cosmetic and equipment upgrades for less than £2,000.

The new special editions feature 19-inch Onyx black alloy wheels, a panoramic glass sunroof, black exterior mirror housings, plus blacked-out rear name plates, and high-gloss black trim on the roof and rear pillar.

Inside, the VW ID.4 Black Edition and VW ID.5 Black Edition benefit from the brand’s Top-Sport ‘Plus’ interior pack, which includes black front sports seats with integrated head restraints, electronically-adjustable lumbar support, and a massage function. They are also upholstered in VW’s ArtVelours microfleece material.

In total, the updates that come with the Black Edition amount to £4,625, but the new models are priced at just £1,780 over existing entry-level VW ID.4 and ID.5 Match cars.

The VW ID.4 and ID.5 Black Edition starts from £46,180 for the rear wheel-drive ID.4 Black Edition, £47,900 for the all wheel-drive ID.4 Black Edition 4Motion, and £47,680 for the RWD-only ID.5 Black Edition. Each model comes with a 77 kWh battery and produces 286bhp.  The RWD cars will return a range of 336 miles in the ID.4, and 341 miles in the swoopier, more aerodynamically-efficient ID.5.

While the ID.4 Black Edition 4Motion’s AWD system provides better grip courtesy of a second front-mounted electric motor, the total system power isn’t increased. It also produces a lesser range, and will drain the battery after 322 miles.

Despite a well-documented tricky start with its EV range – especially regarding the infotainment and its software – VW has reversed the fortunes of its all-electric ID. line of cars. In April 2025, the ID.3 was the second-most sold EV in the United Kingdom, with the ID.7 and ID.4 ranking third and fourth respectively.

It was the the Elroq compact SUV produced by VW-owned Skoda that topped the UK EV sales charts, with a total of 7,998 units sold since it debuted at the start of 2025.
