Tesla set to bring Europe’s largest EV supercharging hub to UK
Tesla is involved in a bid to open Europe’s largest electric vehicle supercharging hub in the UK, setting a new benchmark for the nation’s EV charging infrastructure and underlining the country’s commitment to zero-emission travel.
According to recent reports, the planned mega-site will feature scores of ultra-fast chargers, offering seamless, high-capacity recharging for the growing community of EV owners.
Although Tesla is not mentioned by name, the application references ‘a market leading EV manufacturer and charge point operator’. While many other car makers have partnerships with charge point operators, Tesla is the only one in the UK to run its own Supercharger charging network.
A planning application has been submitted to transform a former petrol station close to Manchester’s Trafford Centre into an ultra-rapid charging hub capable of serving hundreds of cars per hour. If approved, the plan will see an 47 new 250kW devices installed on the site, taking the total number of ultra-rapid chargers at the location to 65.
The plan would also see the creation of a new two-storey car sales space and a drive-through Starbucks.
Matthew Anderson, development director at Trafford Centre management firm Pradera Lateral, said: “The plans for this area have been brought forward in collaboration with Starbucks and a marketing leading EV manufacturer and charge point operator. We have worked closely together to design a scheme that compliments both Trafford Centre and the local area, is forwarding thinking, secures biodiversity improvements and supports more sustainable forms of travel to and from the centre.
“Our proposals will deliver a further 47 ultra rapid chargers, taking the total at the centre to 65, which is expected to make Trafford Centre the largest ultra-rapid charging hub in Europe.”
This ambitious initiative comes at a time when the British government and the automotive industry are ramping up efforts to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate the switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The forthcoming supercharging hub is designed to ease concerns around charging availability and speed—key barriers to EV uptake cited by many prospective buyers.
Not only will the new charging hub serve as a catalyst for EV adoption, but it also promises substantial economic benefits. The site is likely to create jobs in construction, maintenance, and operations, while strengthening the UK’s positioning as a leader in sustainable transport technologies. It further sets a precedent for other European nations by showcasing how large-scale, centrally located charging solutions can support growing EV fleets.
The announcement dovetails with a wave of green transport initiatives across the UK. With London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone expanding and more cities introducing clean air zones, the need for robust EV infrastructure has never been greater. The forthcoming hub stands to play a pivotal role in ensuring Britain stays ahead in the race towards widespread electric mobility, providing confidence to both current EV drivers and those considering making the switch.
