Peugeot’s €1bn investment into Mulhouse factory hints at E-308 replacement

Stellantis has confirmed that it has invested more than €1 billion into its historic Mulhouse factory in France to build new C-segment Peugeot EVs from 2029 onwards.

Located in the Alsace region, the Mulhouse plant boasts over 4,500 employees and has been producing Peugeots since 1972. This latest investment will boost factory production capacity and secure the plant’s future competitiveness, especially as Chinese manufacturers are now building cars in Europe for the European market.

The three new C-segment models will be based on Stellantis’s new STLA One platform, which can accommodate either electric-only, hybrid, or internal combustion powertrains. Its scalable nature means it can underpin everything from the Peugeot E-208 supermini to the seven-seat, E-5008 SUV.

STLA One also integrates the battery into the car’s chassis and adopts a software-defined approach to ensure longevity and reduce development costs across the board.

Peugeot E-308 is built in Mulhouse

We already know that STLA One will underpin Alfa Romeo’s upcoming C-segment electric-only hatchback, which is likely to be called the Giulietta and rival the upcoming electric Volkswagen Golf. This suggests that a replacement for the similarly sized E-308 could be one of the Mulhouse cars born from this latest round of funding. Given Peugeot’s naming system, it could very possibly adopt the e-309 badge.

“I am very pleased to announce that the Mulhouse site has been selected to produce three 100% electric and hybrid models from the Peugeot brand,” said Stellantis CEO, Antonio Filosa, speaking from the Mulhouse factory. “This decision attests to the professionalism and exceptional commitment—particularly in terms of industrial quality and performance—of our employees over the past few years.

“France perfectly exemplifies Stellantis’ global strategy, presented in our FaSTLAne 2030 plan, where our global scale, our in-depth local knowledge, and our brands come together to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.”

Current Peugeot EVs built in Mulhouse include the E-208, E-408, E-308, and the E-308 SW estate.
