Smart #5 arrives in UK priced from under £40,000

The Smart #5 has gone on sale in the UK with a starting price of £39,800.

Smart’s biggest model so far, the #5 is a mid-sized SUV rival to the Skoda Enyaq, Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5 and comes in everything from sensible single-motor variants to a 637bhp Brabus model.

In a departure from the sleek #1 and #3 models, the Smart #5 is a boxy, off-road inspired family model with chunky styling and the option of four-wheel drive with multiple off-road modes.

Orders books are open now and buyers have five trim levels to choose from, bringing a variety of battery and motor options. Entry level Pro versions start at just under £40,000 and feature a single rear-mounted motor producing 268bhp. This is powered by a 74.4kWh battery with up to 289 miles of range.

Above that the £43,800 Pro+ version and £47,300 Premium models step up to a 358bhp motor and 94kWh battery with up to 366 miles of range.

All-wheel-drive becomes standard on Pulse and limited edition Summit Edition grades. A second motor takes power up to 580bhp but drops the range slightly to 335 miles. Pulse grade starts at £47,300 while Summit is an additional £1,500. Pulse models put a focus on off-road ability with five drive modes – adaptive, sand, snow, mud, and rock.

At the very top of the range the outrageous #5 Brabus ditches off-road pretensions in favour of performance, offering 637bhp and 524lb ft from its two-motor powertrain. That will get this 2.3-tonne SUV from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds – two seconds faster than other AWD models and nearly three seconds faster than the RWD Premium. The price for such performance? £51,800.

Every version fitted with the larger battery benefits from 800V architecture allowing up to 400kW DC charging, meaning a 10-80% top-up takes just 18 minutes. Pro models are limited to 150kW and miss out on the standard-fit heat pump of more expensive models. All versions feature vehicle-to-load charging as standard.

Every version of the #5 also gets heated front seats, two-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate and 13-inch central touchscreen. Higher grades add heated rear seats, real leather upholstery, a 1,190W Sennheiser Signature sound system, augmented reality head-up display and second 13-inch touchscreen in front of the passenger.

The #5 joins the existing #1 and #3 models in the Geely-owned brand’s line-up. Next year will see Smart return to its roots with the #2 an all-new, all-electric reimagining of the original Smart fortwo.
