Renault shares first images of new Renault 4 E-Tech

Renault has given the first glimpses of its new Renault 4 E-Tech ahead of the car’s global reveal.

The new B-segment crossover will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show on 14 October but the new images give clues to the exterior styling of the new all-electric model, including several nods to the original 4.

The Renault 4 is based on the same AmpR Small platform as the Renault 5 supermini but at 4.14 metres, it is more than 20cm longer. Renault says it has been designed to bring the usability and versatility of the original 4 but with all the benefits of a modern electric drivetrain. According to Renault, the 4 will offer class-leading interior space, comfort and agility.

The new images suggest a slightly curvy but boxy upright shape, with a flat grille and slightly angled tailgate, similar to the original car’s design. Like the original 4, the new model features round headlights pushed to the edges of an oblong grilled. But this new model features an illuminated strip encapsulating them and the full-width grille. For the first time, the Renault badge at the centre of the grille is also illuminated.

At the rear, the pill-shaped tail lights mimic the originals but feature LED technology, and quarterlight windows pay homage to the 1960s design, as do vertical overriders on the front and rear bumpers.

Bringing even more of a retro feel to proceedings is a fabric sunroof that stretches most of the length of the car and, once again, echoes a feature of more luxurious examples of the original Renault 4.

There are no technical details yet, but as it’s based on the same platform as the Renault 5, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Renault 4 E-Tech uses at least one of the powertrain options confirmed for the 5. Those include a 148bhp motor and 52kWh battery, or a 118bhp/40kWh combination.

The Renault 4 will be built at the firms’ factory in Maubeuge, France, and go on sale in 2025. UK customers keen to join the queue for the new model will soon be able to sign up to the R4 R Pass, which will give them priority ordering and fast track delivery when the car goes on sale.
