Omoda & Jaecoo launches 745-mile ‘super-hybrid’ in the UK
Chinese manufacturer Omoda & Jaecoo has introduced its newly developed plug-in Super Hybrid System (SHS) to the UK market.
The first model to feature the SHS will be the Jaecoo 7 SUV, and parent company Chery Group reports that it will return 403mpg and a 745-mile range on the WLTP cycle.
The Jaecoo 7 SHS combines a 1.5-litre, 143bhp petrol engine with an electric powertrain delivering a total system output of 201bhp and 229lb ft of torque. The 0-62mph run is just 8.5 seconds.
The SHS features an 18.3kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, providing an electric-only range of 56 miles. According to Omoda & Jaecoo, the hybrid system maintains battery charge and prevents it from dropping to 0%, distinguishing it from traditional plug-in hybrids.
The battery charges at up to 40kW, allowing a 30-80% recharge in around 40 minutes.
Key features of the powertrain include a fifth-generation petrol engine with Miller cycle technology, intelligent thermal management, and efficient turbocharging. The hybrid transmission incorporates quad-core dual electronic control and high-efficiency dual motors.
“The rapid growth of new energy vehicles is set to continue, and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are a key part of this expansion around the world,” said Peter Matkin, chief engineer at Jaecoo and head of engineering for Chery Group.
“The SHS enables an improved driving experience and better fuel economy, which is helped by a unique engineering solution. Jaecoo engineers have worked tirelessly to fine-tune Chery’s CDM hybrid technology to offer a truly viable alternative to a pure electric vehicle.”#
Orders for the Jaecoo 7 SHS are open now, with rpices starting at £35,065. First customer deliveries are expected from the end of January.
