Motability Operations and Nissan V2G partner up to slash EV running costs

Motability Operations and Nissan have signed an agreement to explore how Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology can reduce electricity costs for EV drivers on the Motability Scheme.

Centred around the Sunderland-built Nissan Leaf, the tie-up will explore how V2G enables owners to sell electricity stored in the car’s battery back to the grid during periods of high demand. This is usually early evening when energy use and prices are higher.

Should Leaf owners charge their vehicle when electricity is cheaper, selling energy back to the grid during periods when electricity is most needed has the opportunity to reduce motoring costs and household bills.

The Motability/Nissan partnership supports Motability Operations’ goal to increase the number of EVs on its fleet. By 2035, it has set itself the target of having 50% of its vehicles manufactured in Britain.

Commenting on the partnership, Andrew Miller, the Motability Operations CEO, said: “Our focus is on ensuring the Scheme remains a lifeline of independence that is affordable and fit for the future.

“By partnering with Nissan to explore Vehicle-to-Grid technology, we are looking at how we can help our customers get the most value out of their EVs. By partnering with Nissan on Vehicle-to-Grid technology, we are taking deliberate steps to explore how British-built innovation can help reduce the long-term cost of running an EV for our customers.”

The tie-up between the two parties was in part driven by financial factors. Motability Scheme research shows that 22% of motorists cited running costs as the single most important factor when choosing a new car.

Priced from £32,249, the latest Nissan Leaf qualifies for the full £3,500 electric car grant. The reborn EV icon is available in four trim levels – Engage, Engage+, Advance and Evolve. Nissan also offers the new front-wheel-drive Leaf with two battery choices and horsepower: a 75kWh unit returning up to 386 miles of range and 215bhp, while a 271bhp car with a 52kWh, 271-mile range will arrive later in 2026.
