Mercedes-AMG’s electric revolution picks up pace with new SUV and four-door coupé winter tests

Mercedes-AMG has begun cold-weather trials of its forthcoming high-performance electric SUV, just weeks after unveiling plans for the model.

The tests, now underway in northern Sweden, mark a crucial phase in the development of the second vehicle built on the new AMG.EA electric platform—a bespoke architecture signalling the brand’s intent to challenge luxury rivals and reshape the high-end EV market.

The sub-zero testing regime replicates the conditions that greeted the AMG.EA-based four-door coupé during its initial trials last spring. Engineering teams have returned to the Arctic Circle to put every aspect of the new SUV’s electrified drivetrain, battery management, and software controls through their paces. Temperatures well below freezing will scrutinise the interplay of components under the harshest conditions, ensuring the resulting production models can deliver uncompromising performance and reliability on the road.

Beyond enduring the ice and snow, the SUV’s trial period in Sweden will test the brand’s “pioneering role” in performance EV engineering, as Mercedes-AMG describes it. The high-performance drive system incorporates axial-flux motors, a cutting-edge technology that promises higher power density and improved efficiency. A new high-performance battery concept is also part of the mix, essential for achieving the sustained energy delivery and rapid response demanded by AMG’s clientele.

This combination of advanced motors and intelligent battery management underlines AMG’s ambition to rival future generations of established performance-focused SUVs, such as forthcoming all-electric iterations of the Porsche Cayenne. As the global premium market pivots towards zero-emission mobility, Mercedes-AMG’s early adoption of advanced EV architectures signals a clear strategy: to maintain its brand identity of luxury, power, and driving engagement—even as it shifts away from traditional internal combustion engines.

The testing currently underway forms part of a broader, multi-stage validation programme that will continue through various climates and terrains.
