Kia unveils PV5 WAV for wheelchair-bound users
Kia has introduced its all-electric PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summi’ in London.
The Kia PV5 WAV is a collaboration between the South Korean carmaker, and Motability Operations Ltd; a UK-based motability scheme provider.
This wheelchair-friendly derivative of the upcoming PV5 van is also built on Seoul-based manufacturer’s dedicated, all-electric PBV (Platform Beyond Vehicle) modular architecture.
The PV5 WAV addresses the mobility challenges faced by wheelchair users, their families, caregivers, and drivers, by featuring a side-entry system allowing wheelchair-using passengers to board the vehicle safely from the pavement. The system features a quick-use, 300kg-rated wheelchair entry ramp and a bespoke wheelchair belt-fastening system. Further disabled-friendly features include a third-row tip seat, enabling wheelchair passengers to be assisted from the side.

For over a decade, Kia has committed to improving accessibility via a series of measures including the ‘Green Trip’ project in South Korea, aimed improving mobility rights for people with disabilites. Fast-forward to 2021, and Kia rolled out a ride-sharing service for those with specialised mobility needs.
“The Kia PV5 WAV is more than just a vehicle,” said Sangdae Kim, executive vice president and head of Kia’s PBV division. “By integrating cutting-edge Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) technology with thoughtful design, we are paving the way for a future where everyone can enjoy the benefits of sustainable mobility, and our partnership with Motability Operations is a testament to our commitment to making this vision a reality.”
Kia cites increasing life expectancies, growing elderly populations, plus the gradual phase out of internal combustion engine (ICEs) as the predominant factors behind the introduction of its PV5 WAV. At Kia EV Day earlier this year, it announced its collaboration with Motability Operations.
Kia has yet to make public the pricing and arrival date for the PV5 WAV. However, order books opened for the standard Kia PV5 Passenger and Cargo in early May 2025, with prices starting from £32,995. Deliveries are scheduled for later in the year.
