The Geely EX2 will go on sale in the UK this August, where it aims to stake its claim in the increasingly competitive supermini class.

Upon arrival, the five-seat Geely EX2, which was China’s best-selling car last year, aims to compete with the UK’s best-selling EV, the Renault 5, along with the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 3 and Volkswagen ID Polo.

Known as the ‘Xingyuan’ at home, the Geely EX2 comes with a single, rear-mounted motor generating either 78bhp or 114bhp. The battery choices are expected to be either a 30.1kWh unit or a 40.2kWh pack. In larger-battery format, Geely says the EX2 will return up to 214 miles on the WLTP test cycle. That puts it behind the 252-mile Renault and the Hyundai and VW, which are expected to deliver up to 308 miles and 280 miles respectively.

Geely EX2 side profile

Ahead of the EX2’s launch next month, Geely has yet to announce specifications and pricing, however, brand’s other cars – the EX5 EV and Starray PHEV – both offer substantial equipment lists for relatively low prices, suggesting the EX2 will similarly aim to undercut key opponents.

The Geely EX2 is vital to the Chinese automotive giant’s aggressive UK growth plans. It aims to have a portfolio of 10 models by 2029 and reach 100,000 sales the following year.

To contextualise how ambitious Geely’s UK plans are, it took Kia from 1991 to 2022 to hit the 100,000 vehicle mark. Nonetheless, it sold a total of 450,000 EX2s in China last year.

Upon arrival, the EX2 will be the third model in Geely’s roster alongside the EX5 and the Starray plug-in hybrid (PHEV). As well as being a standalone manufacturer, Geely owns several other brands operating in the UK, including Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, and Smart.
