Europcar UK clocks over a million electric rental days in 2024 as green drive accelerates

Europcar Mobility Group UK has recorded a major milestone in its transition to low-emission transport, with more than 1.24 million rental days in electric and hybrid vehicles logged across 2024 — a fivefold increase on the 228,000 recorded in 2023.

Driven by a strategy to simplify and encourage electric mobility for both business and leisure users, the company has significantly expanded its electrified fleet. As of this year, 14 per cent of Europcar’s cars are either fully electric or plug-in hybrid — well ahead of the UK rental sector average.

The figures, published in Europcar’s latest Sustainability Report, highlight a comprehensive approach to reducing mobility-related emissions. The company now supports its Deliver & Collect service using electric cars and e-bikes, resulting in a reduction of 80.5 tonnes of CO₂ in 2024 alone — the equivalent of taking 168 return flights from Paris to New York or charging more than 20 million smartphones.

Electric vehicles covered over 1 million miles to deliver and collect rental vehicles, saving 78,516kg of CO₂, while e-bikes used by collection personnel cut a further 2,016kg.

The business has also introduced environmental improvements at its rental locations, including reduced energy and water usage, increased recycling, and tree-planting initiatives across the UK.

Tom Middleditch, Head of Electric Mobility at Europcar Mobility Group UK, said: “2024 saw us take some exciting strides forward on this journey, meeting important milestones and breaking new ground in the vehicle rental industry. We’re committed to supporting fleets and individuals in reducing their environmental impact, and these results reflect the real progress we’ve made.”

Looking ahead, Europcar has launched several industry-leading policies to make EV rentals more accessible and convenient. From 1 April 2025, the company introduced price parity for business account holders, with electric car and van rentals now priced the same as their petrol or diesel equivalents — removing a key barrier to adoption.

In another customer-first move, Europcar has implemented a flexible charging policy: EVs will now be supplied with at least 80 per cent charge and can be returned with just 20 per cent, helping to ease “range anxiety” and reduce hassle for renters.

As the transition to zero-emission transport accelerates, Europcar UK’s innovations and investment in sustainable mobility are setting a strong precedent for the wider rental industry — and making it easier than ever for customers to go electric.
