Edinburgh named best place in UK for drivers under 25 to get EV insurance

Edinburgh is the cheapest place for EV insurance for drivers under 25, according to recent research by MoneySuperMarket.

The findings from the comparison service show that it will cost younger motorists in Edinburgh £1,278 per year to insure an EV. Meanwhile, the equivalent diesel or petrol car will set them back £1,572 per year, making the Scottish capital one of four cities where EVs are cheaper than combustion-engined (ICE) cars for younger drivers.

The second cheapest place to insure an EV for a UK driver under 25 is Birmingham, where premiums are an average of £1,628 per year. In comparison, an ICE car will cost them £1,809; an additional £181.

Nottingham is third in favour of an EV, with an average premium of on £1,395 compared with £1,512 for an ICE, meaning a saving of £117 can be made by going electric. Liverpool is the fourth cheapest, with EV insurance costing £1,907 annually, compared to £1,964 for an ICE – a price jump of £57.

Despite playing host to a third of the UK’s ultra-fast EV charging network, London is the most expensive place for EV drivers under 25 to insure their cars. MoneySuperMarket estimates that the average cost to ensure an EV in the capital is £2,855, some £1,000 more than the national figure.

Brighton was the second most expensive on MoneySuperMarket’s list, with average EV insurance costing £2,225 for drivers under 25 who have held their licence for two years. This is £344 more than the national average.

MoneySuperMarket says its has seen a 14% year-on-year increase in the demand for EV insurance over the course of the first quarter of 2025.

As well discounts and perks offered on EVs by manufacturers, this correlates with the findings that 36% of people aged 18 to 34 would prefer to drive in an EV over an ICE.
