Can-Am showcases new electric motorbikes at Motorcycle Live
Can-Am has staged the UK unveiling of its new Pulse and Origin electric motorcycles.
The firm famous for its three-wheeled motorcycles and off-road quads and buggies is entering the EV market with two brand-new motorbikes which made their UK debut at Motorcycle Live 2024.
The Can-Am Pulse and Origin are designed to offer a choice of urban or all-terrain bikes for existing and new riders.
The Pulse has been developed with a compact design for city riding and comes with four different riding modes: Normal, Sport+, ECO, and Rain, which riders can switch between to suit the conditions.
The more rugged Origin has been designed for on- and off-road, using Can-Am’s motocross experience. It features KYB front shocks with 225mm of travel, and an adjustable rear shock, as well as all-terrain tyres. It also comes with adjustable ABS and traction control and six riding modes, including two dedicated off-road settings.
Both bikes use a shared Rotax E-Power motor developed by parent company BRP, with a choice of power outputs. To meet lower-level licensing standards and put the bikes in line with most of the two-wheel EV market, there is an 11kW (15bhp) option that can be ridden on an A1 licence. Above that there is a 35kW (47bhp) version of the motor that provides the same 80mph top speed but improves acceleration. The more powerful Pulse will go from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds while the Origin takes 4.3 seconds.
All versions of the bikes use a liquid-cooled 8.9kWh battery with 6.6kW charging and adaptive regenerative braking. On a full charge, the Pulse offers a combined range of 80 miles, while the Origin will cover up to 71 miles. Both will charge from 20-80% in 50 minutes via a Type 2 connection.
Mike Loach, BRP commercial manager UK and Ireland, said: “We are excited our electric motorcycles are now here to enjoy their UK debut. The Can-Am Pulse and Can-Am Origin bring forth our long-standing two-wheel heritage and addresses both experienced and new riders who are looking for an innovative and energised experience. In addition, the bikes are our first foray into the EV market, supporting us on our way to becoming a global electric motorcycle leader.”
UK prices are still to be announced but in Europe, the Pulse is priced from €16,999, while the Origin starts at €17,599.
