2025 Toyota bZ4X updates bring range and power boost

The Toyota bZ4X has been updated with new batteries, motors and faster charging times for 2025.

Toyota’s first all-electric model has been on sale since 2022 and undergone several minor updates since then to address early criticism. However, for 2025, the Japanese brand has made a raft of technical changes to improve range, performance and customer choice.

Chief among these is the addition of a second battery option, which introduces a 57.7kWh (gross) unit. That will be paired exclusively with a 165bhp motor powering the front wheels for a new cheaper entry point to the range.

Alongside the new small-capacity battery, the previous 71.4kWh battery has been upgraded to 73.1kWh. As before, this will be offered in two- and four-wheel-drive variants, both of which have received power upgrades as part of the changes. The front-wheel-drive bZ4X uses a 221bhp motor in place of the previous 201bhp unit, while the two-motor all-wheel-drive variant gets a major increase from 215bhp to 338bhp – the same as in the new C-HR+ EV.

Toyota says that in its most efficient form, the new BZX4 will manage 356 miles on a single charge – nearly 40 miles more than before. While its maximum charging rate remains unchanged at 150kW, battery upgrades and the addition of pre-conditioning mean charging times have also been cut.

As well as more power, the all-wheel-drive bZ4X also gets a major uplift in towing capacity – doubling to 1,500kg. And all versions benefit from revised suspension and bodywork designed to reduce noise and vibration levels inside the car.

Away from the technical changes, the bZ4X has been given a cosmetic nip and tuck which presents a sleeker front end and improved aerodynamics. Inside, there’s a new-look instrument binnacle and redesigned centre console with more premium materials and twin wireless phone chargers. These sit beneath a new 14-inch infotainment system with integrated heater dials that looks to have been borrowed from Lexus.

The 2025 Toyota bZ4X will go on sale in the summer, with full UK pricing and specifications confirmed nearer the time.
