It’s not just about racing

Formula E is also largely about sustainability. Through competition, car manufacturers develop and test new technologies that will help to combat climate change in the second stage. Formula E itself has set itself the goal of “reducing our environmental footprint as much as possible and creating a positive impact on both people and the planet.”

This is achieved, among other things, by using 100% renewable energy and tires that last an entire race and can then be recycled. In addition, there are no parking spaces at the respective events, which is why people are encouraged to switch to public transportation. Fans and interested spectators also have the opportunity to watch races live and in 360 degrees from the comfort of their own homes via the internet.

How did it all begin?

Jean Todt, President of the FIA, teamed up with Formula E founder and CEO Alejandro Agag to create an environmentally friendly, global motorsport brand. Formula E is currently in its fourth season and is becoming more attractive every year as more and more top drivers join the grid.

Incidentally, the fans are much more than just spectators. They can influence the outcome of a race by voting for their favorite driver. The three drivers with the most votes receive an additional power boost that they can use in the second half of the race.

What are the rules?

As in F1, there are two titles up for grabs: best driver and best team. You are probably already familiar with how this system works. The best driver is determined at the end of the season based on their results. To determine the best team, the scores of both drivers throughout the season are included in the calculation.

The day before a race, the drivers check whether the car is working as it should in a so-called shakedown session, while the FIA inspects the track. Qualifying lasts one hour and determines the starting grid. There are a lot of additional rules and regulations, but that’s part and parcel of motorsport these days.

Where is Formula E headed?

With the start of the Formula E season, the debate about the series’ relevance has reignited. Audi and BMW have announced their withdrawal at the end of the season. This puts the series’ reputation at risk. Formula 1 is also challenging the E-series’ unique green selling point with new announcements.

BMW gives a similar reason for its withdrawal: the possibilities for transferring technology from Formula E to cars for ordinary mortals have been exhausted. For example, the company uses the same software in its electric cars for the road as it does in the racing series. This raises the question of what Formula E is actually needed for. Richter draws a historical comparison: “Since its inception in 2014 and into the foreseeable future, Formula E has served a similar function in terms of transferring newly developed technology from racing to the road as Formula 1 has since its inception in 1950. Let’s say in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and even largely in the 1980s.”

Nevertheless, compared to other racing series, the development potential in Formula E is limited. For example, the cars’ batteries are standardised. However, there is no question of the racing series falling apart. According to Richter, in addition to McLaren, other manufacturers have expressed interest in joining following the announcements of their departure: “A few weeks later, the newly founded Stellantis Group publicly announced its intention to enter Formula E with one of the established motorsport brands Alfa Romeo or Maserati.”
