Apple is pushing the iPhone deeper into the dashboard while Google is making Android Auto and Google built-in more intelligent. For EV drivers, that turns phone choice into part of the car-buying decision.

The in-car technology battle used to be simple: Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, whichever matched the phone in your pocket. In 2026, that distinction is getting harder to ignore – especially for electric-car buyers, where software is increasingly tied to charging, navigation, pre-conditioning, media and the everyday usability of the vehicle.

Apple is taking one route with CarPlay Ultra, which extends the familiar iPhone interface across more of the car. Google is taking another, layering Gemini into Android Auto while also pushing much deeper vehicle integration through cars with Google built-in. The result is that the phone ecosystem you prefer can now affect how an EV feels to live with.

First, this is not quite a like-for-like comparison

CarPlay Ultra is more ambitious than traditional phone projection. Apple says it can provide content across all of the driver’s screens, including the instrument cluster, show real-time vehicle information and gauges, and surface controls such as climate settings while still reflecting the manufacturer’s own design language.

Android Auto remains primarily a phone-powered interface, but Google is widening what it can do. Google says there are now more than 250 million Android Auto-compatible cars on the road, with Gemini widely available in Android Auto and a new generation of features planned for supported vehicles, including richer media and video while parked.

For the closest equivalent to CarPlay Ultra’s deeper integration, you really have to include Google built-in in the Android side of the discussion. That system runs Google services natively in the car rather than projecting them from a phone, and Gemini can interact with vehicle-specific information and, in eligible cars, help with functions such as climate control and charger searches.

CarPlay Ultra: the iPhone becomes part of the car

The clever part of CarPlay Ultra is consistency. Instead of jumping between an automaker’s graphics for vehicle functions and Apple’s interface for maps or music, Apple wants the two to feel like one environment. Speed, range, media, navigation and other information can all be presented through a shared design.

For an EV, that approach has obvious appeal. Range, battery state, route guidance and charging information are not secondary screens; they are core parts of every journey. If the system is well implemented, the driver gets the familiarity of an iPhone without losing the vehicle information that matters.

There is a catch: availability. Apple launched CarPlay Ultra with Aston Martin in North America and named Hyundai, Kia and Genesis among the manufacturers committed to bringing it to future vehicles. That is significant, but it is nowhere near the footprint of conventional CarPlay or Android Auto today. CarPlay Ultra therefore remains something to assess on the specific EV you are buying, not a feature you can assume will be present.

Android Auto: scale, Gemini and Google Maps are formidable advantages

Android Auto’s biggest strength is that it is already everywhere. A buyer moving between brands is far more likely to find Android Auto support than CarPlay Ultra, and the system already carries the apps and habits many Android users rely on.

Gemini changes the voice side of the experience. Natural-language requests can handle more complicated tasks than the old Google Assistant model – finding a charging stop with a cafe nearby, changing a route, summarising messages or handling multi-step requests with less rigid phrasing. For drivers, that matters because every useful interaction completed by voice is one less reason to prod a touchscreen.

Google built-in pushes the idea further. Google describes Gemini as being able to use vehicle-specific knowledge, including information from the owner’s manual, and to answer questions about the car itself. That is the point where the distinction between smartphone software and vehicle software starts to blur.

EV routing is where the ecosystem choice becomes practical

Petrol and diesel drivers can tolerate mediocre navigation and still know there will be a filling station around the corner. EV drivers care much more about the quality of route planning, charger data and how accurately the software understands the car’s energy needs.

Google has a natural advantage here because Maps is deeply embedded in Android Auto and Google built-in, while manufacturers using Google Automotive Services can feed vehicle information directly into routing. Apple is pursuing similar integration from the other direction, with CarPlay Ultra able to incorporate vehicle data rather than acting as a separate layer floating above the car.

The best system therefore depends less on which home screen looks nicer and more on how well the specific manufacturer has implemented it. A brilliant native EV system with Google built-in may be better than either projection platform. A mediocre native system could make CarPlay Ultra feel transformative.

The carmakers do not want to give up the dashboard either

There is a third player in this fight: the car company itself. Automakers increasingly see software, subscriptions and user data as part of the value of the vehicle, so handing the entire cockpit to Apple or Google is not an easy decision.

Hyundai Motor Group is a good example. While Hyundai, Kia and Genesis have been named by Apple as CarPlay Ultra partners, the group is simultaneously developing its own next-generation infotainment platform. Pleos Connect is designed around an app ecosystem and an AI agent called Gleo, with a phased global rollout planned after its Korean debut.

That points to the likely future: not one universal winner, but a mixture of strong native systems, phone projection and deeper integrations, with drivers deciding how much of their digital life they want the carmaker to control.

So which is better for EV drivers?

For an iPhone owner buying an EV that supports CarPlay Ultra properly, Apple’s solution could be the more polished experience because it treats the car and phone as parts of one interface. For an Android user – or someone who changes cars regularly – Android Auto’s scale and Google’s rapid Gemini rollout make it the safer ecosystem bet today.

But there is no reason to choose a £40,000 EV purely around a £1,000 phone. The better approach is to test both systems in the actual car. Try route planning to a rapid charger, make a voice request, change media, adjust a vehicle setting and see how often the interface forces you back into the manufacturer’s menus. Those five minutes will tell you more than a specification sheet.

Could your next EV make you switch phones?

Possibly – and that is where the relationship becomes interesting. If the EV you really want offers a noticeably better experience on the opposite mobile ecosystem, changing phones is no longer a decision made in isolation. The car has become part of the calculation.

Anyone reaching the point of thinking “should I sell my phone and switch ecosystems?” should at least price the current handset before buying the replacement. A recent flagship can offset a meaningful chunk of the move, and iPhone owners can also compare current iPhone recycler offers rather than treating a single manufacturer trade-in quote as the market price.

That is deliberately a secondary consideration, though. The bigger story is that the dashboard is becoming another part of our personal computing ecosystem. The EV used to be the device you connected your phone to. Increasingly, it is becoming a device in its own right.

The verdict

CarPlay Ultra is the more radical rethink of phone-to-car integration, but Android Auto remains far more accessible and Gemini gives Google a compelling advantage in conversational assistance. Add Google built-in and the Android side can become just as deeply connected to the vehicle – sometimes more so.

For EV buyers, that means the old “does it have CarPlay?” checkbox is no longer enough. Ask how the software handles charging, routing, voice control and vehicle data, and decide whether the phone in your pocket improves the car or merely appears on its screen.
