Geely has confirmed that it will bring its Monjaro plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV to Europe to compete with the Nissan X-Trail, the Peugeot 5008, and the Skoda Kodiaq.
The Geely Monjaro has been on sale at home in China as the Xingyue L since 2021. According to the Chinese automaker, the Monjaro takes its name from Mount Kilimanjaro, and not the (differently spelled) popular weight-loss injection.
Geely’s flagship went on sale in Egypt this August, with an expansion “into global markets” to follow shortly after. A Europe-wide debut is expected to happen by the end of 2026, with the UK launch set for 2027.
The Monjaro sits on a modified platform used to underpin several models sold by Volvo and Zeekr – two of the several brands that fall under Geely’s ownership. The China-spec Xingyue L even shares the same turbocharged four-cylinder as selected Volvo models. In terms of design, it’s not dissimilar to the best-selling Volvo XC60.
Geely hasn’t made any official announcements regarding the Monjaro’s powertrain. However, we do know that it’ll be powered by a twin-motor version of its clever DM-i PHEV system. The Monjaro’s dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) system marks a first for the brand. Once more, Geely has supplied no information about the Monjaro’s battery, fuel consumption, or electric-only range.
For reference, the front-wheel-drive (FWD) Starray PHEV SUV – one of two Geely models on sale here – has a naturally aspirated, 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor to produce 258bhp. The Starray is offered with two battery options, the larger of which generates up to 81 miles of electric-only driving.
Upon arrival, the Geely Monjaro promises to be a “global advanced handling and quality benchmark among the D-SUV hybrid segment”. Likely to be the third Geely model to go on sale in the UK alongside the Starray PHEV, plus the all-electric EX2 and EX5 SUV.
By 2029, Geely plans to introduce 10 models to its UK roster and break the threshold of selling 100,000 cars by the following year. Geely is expected to price the Monjaro at around £40,000.
