Smart Concept #2 revealed ahead of Auto Beijing 2026
Smart has released a set of design sketches and images of its Concept #2, just days before its debut at Auto Beijing 2026, on April 22.
The Smart Concept #2 is an all-electric reinterpretation of the Smart Fortwo city car, which was introduced in 1998. According to the Chinese-German carmaker, the Concept #2 “interprets smart design through a style-inspired lens, where function becomes form”.
Using the teaser images as a reference point, the Concept #2 reflects the Fortwo’s one-box design and ultra-compact dimensions, suggesting an overall length of under three metres, not dissimilar to that of its 2.7m-long predecessor.
Riding on Smart’s Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) platform, the Concept #2 has a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration, along with a two-door, two-seat layout like the Fortwo.
Inside and out, the Concept #2 has been penned by the design team at Smart’s co-owner, Mercedes-Benz. Leaning into “modernist minimalism and premium fashion influences”, the exterior is finished in a two-tone matte white and gold palette, paired with buckles and fine leather applications.
The gold detailing looks to be applied to the A-pillar, windscreen surround, multi-spoke alloy wheels, and badging. While made with European cities and consumers in mind, the production version of the Concept #2 – known as the Smart #2 – will be built in China by Chinese automotive giant Geely, Mercedes’s partner at Smart. Smart says the #2 will debut later towards the end of this year.
Auto Beijing 2026 will be a double-launch event for Smart. Alongside the Concept #2, it will introduce the Smart #6 plug-in hybrid, its first-ever premium fastback.
A rival to the likes of the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes C-Class, the Smart #6 EHD promises up to 177 miles of electric driving, and a combined range of 1,125-miles on China’s CLTC cycle. The Smart #6 EHD rides on Geely’s new EM-i 2.0 platform, and is driven by its NordThor hybrid system. Once again penned by the Mercedes design team, the #6 EHD will be sold exclusively in China until further notice.
