Alpine’s new supercar set to be a solid-state battery EV
Alpine has confirmed that it is planning a new supercar halo model, and it is expected to be an all-electric vehicle.
The French sports car specialist announced that the new supercar will be developed at its upgraded Viry-Chatillon plan, alongside new battery and motor technology.
The new Hypertech Alpine research and development centre will be also responsible for the short- to medium-term development of batteries for the next wave of electric Alpines. The brand plans to have seven all-electric models on sale by 2030. These include an electric version of the A110, a new A390 sports crossover, and the Renault 5-based A290 hot hatch.
The centre will also work on the development of new ultra-high density cells and solid state batteries, which Alpine says will be used in extreme operating conditions for ‘supercar-type’ applications. Earlier this year, Alpine revealed the hydrogen-fuelled Alpenglow (pictured above) but the new announcement suggests that the supercar model developed at Viry-Chatillon will be among the seven new EVs by 2030.
Staff at the new centre will work with Renualt’s Ampere EV arm to develop the next generation of EV motors for use across Renault Group brands.
The site south of Paris currently builds engines for the Alpine Formula 1 team and development of that will continue alongside the EV research until the end of the 2025 season, at which point the F1 engine specialists will join the Hypertech staff.
The R&D centre will also continue to contribute to Alpine’s other motorsport ventures, including Formula E, the World Endurance Championship and Rally-Raid.
Philippe Krief, Alpine CEO, commented: “Creating this Hypertech Alpine centre is key to Alpine’s development strategy and, more broadly, to the froup’s innovation strategy.
“It is a turning point in the history of the Viry-Châtillon site, which will ensure the continuity of a savoir-faire and the inclusion of its rare skills in the group’s ambitious future while strengthening Alpine’s position as an ‘innovation garage’.
“Its racing DNA remains a cornerstone of the brand. It will continue to fuel an unprecedented industrial and automotive project, thanks particularly to Hypertech Alpine.”
