Isuzu to launch electric D-Max pick-up

Isuzu has revealed an all-electric version of its rugged D-Max pick-up truck.

The Isuzu D-Max BEV will make its public debut at the 45th Bangkok International Motor Show but the firm has already confirmed the first technical details.

Isuzu says its electric truck will use two motors to generate 174bhp and 240lb ft – slightly more than the current diesel version – and offer ‘uncompromised’ performance. A 66.9kWh battery will be standard but there’s no word on range yet.

Isuzu says: “The Isuzu D-Max BEV represents a substantial step forward in the evolution of pick-up trucks, combining the rugged performance and versatility expected of an Isuzu vehicle with the environmental benefits of electric propulsion.”

The D-Max BEV will use new e-axles to provide full-time four-wheel-drive and will offer the same one-tonne payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity of the current 1.9-litre diesel D-Max. Top speed will be limited to 81mph, which Isuzu says is “suitable for a variety of applications, from urban commuting to off-road adventures”.

The D-Max BEV is scheduled to launch in selected European markets in 2025, with sales to right-hand-drive markets including the UK and Australia to follow based on demand.

The UK’s electric pick-up market is currently limited to the Maxus T90 EV, which only offers two-wheel-drive and limited ground clearance. KGM (formerly SsangYong) is due to launch a pick-up based on the new Torres EVX in 2025 and there are rumours of a Ford electric pick-up for Europe which would be smaller than its current F-150 Lightning and presumably sit alongside the current diesel Ranger series.
